CanJam London 2018 Impressions Thread (July 21-22, 2018)
Was a little disappointed with CanJam London this year - a 50% increase in entry fee - Sennheiser were not there (and I was particularly interested in hearing the new HD 820) and Violectric were not there this year. Interesting - especially the new Empirion headphones, which I must listen to...- John Willett

Violectric HPA V280 - balanced headphone amp - impressions and discussion thread
Mmmmm - 5 and 6 seem very reasonable, 4 does not, unless it's viewed flexibly. I would have thought that it's very reasonable for an expert on the product to be able to comment on it. However - such comments should be accurate and technically factuall based and not advertising. ...- John Willett

Violectric HPA V281 - Vorsprung durch Balanced (September 2023 Update: Limited Reissue Edition up for preorder!)
Looking at the block diagram in the owner's manual it looks as if you are setting the gain staging in an amplifier. There are two amplification stages, according to the diagram, before the main amplifiers - so it looks as is it is a gain control in 5 preset steps to deliver the crrect...- John Willett

Smallest USB dac/amp combo with full size audio jack?
Personally, top of my list would be a Red Dragonfly and a proper 3.5mm to ¼" adaptor cable. Small, excellent quality, USB powered, and the cable will prevent any strain on the Amp. I know ithe Dragonfly doesn't have a ¼" socket, but this option may actually be better as it reduces the...- John Willett

The Sennheiser Orpheus 2? A First Look At The Sennheiser HE-1 (The New Orpheus)
Interesting - I have known about this for a little while, but was sworn to secrecy. The Orpheus you heard actually belonged to Sennheiser UK - the one that was in the factory was stolen in the USA and Sennheiser UK were instructed to send their one back to Germany - there were some very...- John Willett

Please help me with my survey (about storage)
This is a difficult one to answer really as all my music is on CDs - I do not have any downloads at all. I have, though, several drives of between 500GB and 1TB to hold and archive all my 24/96 session recordings and masters which I have recorded myself.- John Willett

The Sennheiser HD580 Impressions Thread
Interesting ..... My own HD 580 are the very originals from the first production run when they first came out - I did not know they changed them (or maybe it was just due to moving the factory to Ireland) and have not compared mine to later versions. I had a pair of the 540 "Gold" but...- John Willett

The Sennheiser HD580 Impressions Thread
Yes it would, I find my HD 800 very much better than my HD 650. HD 580 Jubilee and HD 580 - and also much better than the HD 700 which I had and then sold on.- John Willett

The Sennheiser HD580 Impressions Thread
Yes, though I think the HD600 may be selected. The HD 600 was originally the Limited Edition "HD 580 Jubilee" of which only 4,000 were made worldwide. Sennheiser then realised how popular such quality headphones were, so they changed the paint job and renamed them the HD 600 (leaving...- John Willett

Sennheiser momentum or Beyerdynamic DT 880
I would not offer such an opinion as to which is "better" - it's a matter of taste and personal choice - both are good, but they are different and you really should listen and decide for yourself.- John Willett

Sennheiser momentum or Beyerdynamic DT 880
These are quite different headphones and you really need to listen and try them out. The Momentum are closed on-ear headphones and great for out-and-about. The DT880 are a larger semi-open design. similar prices, though.- John Willett

Best Studio Headphones
Several posts have mentioned about studio monitors rolling off at the bass end. There are two reasons for this: 1) is the fact that you need to move a lot of air to get a good bottom end. As a comparison, one range of professional monitors:- 5" bass driver - goes down to 50 Hz...- John Willett

Basically, yes - or, rather, as close to the original as I have ever heard it. But my comparison was with my head in the same place as the microphones and the recording was a simple recording with no messing about with it.- John Willett

No, the boost is not audible - you must have misread what I wrote. I used the microphones *vertical* so they were facing upwards. They were at 90° to the piano and at that angle they have a flat response (you can see this by looking at the polar-pattern) - the high-end boost is only...- John Willett

The mics I use for piano are Sennheiser MKH 20, Sennheiser MKH 8020, Neumann KM 183-D, Neumann KM 131-D or Gefell M 221. That particular recording was completely digital and made with the Neumann KM 183-D (mounted vertically as they were in the nearfield) - the recording session was...- John Willett

The HD 800 are the most neutral and revealing headphones I have ever heard. They are *very* revealing of the source - so they will show up the fact that a bright microphone was used in the recording and everything that was used in the chain from the mic. to your ears - so they will reveal...- John Willett

Not according to the Sennheiser website - in fact there is also a new version of the HD 25-1 called the HD 25-1 BASIC. The HD 25-1 II (which was released quite a few years ago) is identical to the original HD 25-1 - the only difference was a longer cable (1.5m instead of 1.2m) and...- John Willett

Closed headphones are not really very good for mixing and mastering - open headphones are better for this. Good tracking headphones are the Sennheiser HD 215 (and HD 215 II) which are affordable, can be worn one-eared and are great for musicians in the studio (and cheap enough as to be not...- John Willett

HD650 headband padding uncomfortable
Quote: The HD 650 headband was specially designed so as *not* to be uncomfortable. That's why it has the "opening" in the middle - to avoid putting any pressure on the part of the head that is the most sensitive. It may be that the foam has disintegrated as it does do this...- John Willett

The Sennheiser HD 800: The First Listen, The First Review
Quote: The HD 800 are high impedance headphones and need a decent amplifier to drive them - almost any MP3 player amp. would be far too weak. They do, however, drive quite nicely from a good battery portable amplifier such as the Graham Slee Voyager. The HD 800 are very...- John Willett

What do you think the new Sennheiser flagship will be?
Quote: I use the Grace m903 for this, but the DACS Clarity HeadMaster is also good. Quote: Who measured it, and how? Sennheiser measured the -3dB point at 16Hz and to claim that it has to be clear and repeatable. I would actually question your measurement...- John Willett
