exclusive/hog mode explanation?
how is it achieved and how crucial is it to good audio? I'm referring to the 'hog' mode as it is sometimes called, which apparently sets aside more resources for coreaudio(?) current set-up:macbook pro 13" 2.3ghz 4gbram snow leopard 10.6.7 running FLAC and lossy usb output into musical...- sunseeker888

Who's heard/used the Thiel CS 3.7?
I've heard it touted as the " speaker of a lifetime " but the problem is I haven't heard it. With a HQ source and enough power I bet it really is a stunning speaker. And the finishes look sweet as well. See, I am a huge fan of time/phase coherent designs, but deep down I like high-eff horns...- sunseeker888

NYC Lifeguard suspended for wearing cans during a drowning
....In Queens, about 3 miles from my home. The photo in the local paper shows the scene,, looks like he was wearing closed-back Audio Technica's but I can't tell. Bloomberg wasn't happy.....- sunseeker888

Budget Vinyl versus CD Comparison
Thought this would be an interesting shootout. The contenders: 1) Sony SCD-CE595 (mods: muting transistors removed, PSU beefed up with 1600uF more capacitance) 2) Pro-Ject Debut III w/ Speedbox and stock arm/cart (8.6 arm/Ortofon OM5E) I chose Toto's album "IV" for the tests since...- sunseeker888

Provisions for measuring output impedance
of a headphone amplifier. Do I need to use white noise or a sine wave for input? Or simply no input? And, will a typical ohmmeter suffice? I tested my amp's output impedance with nothing connected to the input, volume at zero and got~50 Ω on each channel... Any tips on this matter...- sunseeker888

Flying-Fi
Any pilots, copter enthusiasts, or astral-projection aficionados here? I'm planning on getting my chopper license. It always fascinated me. Would be interesting to compile a thread with all the aviation fans here at head-fi. What do you think?- sunseeker888

Turn It Down!
My younger sister just burst into the basement and yelled, "Lower it!!!! There's no reason why i should have to hear every single noise all the way upstairs in my room!!!". (2 floors up) And I was only pushing ~20wpc into my Vandy's. Yet another reason why I love head-fidelity. Just threw on...- sunseeker888

Just Finished a 6BM8 Tube Amp
. . . This wasn't built from scratch, but was actually a stereophonic Motorola radio which I stripped down and modified for use as a standalone power amp for headphones. Tube rectified by a NOS EZ81, and Single Ended Motorola 6BM8's. I did briefly drive speakers off of it but the few watts...- sunseeker888

Grados Must be Voiced for Vinyl...
...because my sr-325i sounds superb with vinyl. Maybe it's just analog in general, although cassette is limited in dynamic range at least on my cheapo system. My sr-80 used to excel with vinyl too! So yeah, what do you guys think? Are the upper-end Prestige series cans 'voiced' for certain...- sunseeker888

What do you think of Vandersteen?
Hey all. I just finished reconditioning my Vandersteen 2C's and I love them. I'm driving em with a Cambridge Audio 640A version 2 integrated and it's a very neutral yet involving system. Being my first experience with Vandersteen, I was wondering what other Head-fiers think about their...- sunseeker888

Opinions on the Little Dot cables
Was wondering what everyone thinks of the rca to minijack interconnects which come supplied with the LD amplifiers. They are gold plated OFC directional cables. I think they do just fine in my system, but how good are they, really? Crap? Excellent? Thanks in advance.- sunseeker888

Speak Up if you like New Wave and 80s Alternative!
Hey all. Been listening to NW/post-punk stuff exclusively for a while now. Some of my favorites are Magazine, Gene Loves Jezebel, Fad Gadget, New Musik, Oingo Boingo, the Chills, and the Psychedelic Furs. Too many more to mention! Last week I picked up a never-before-opened LP by Mi-Sex. Side...- sunseeker888

Opinions Sought on the Cambridge 640A V2
Hi, I *think* this qualifies as high-end since MSRP is about 650. If not, shoot me. Anyway, I am considering this 75wpc integrated as an upgrade for one of my systems. I'll likely be pairing it up with a 540P phono preamp and my ProJect Debut III. Also, My old Proton analog tuner and USB...- sunseeker888

Where to go from Grado
Coming from the 325i, for about 200 new I want: closed full sized cans, medium to high impedance. What I didnt like of the 325i" silibant at times, unforgiving of source flaw, and unusable outside on a train.- sunseeker888

Lovin my Pro-ject Headbox
I think its not about its quality level but the fact that its a better match for my Grados then the Litte Dot's. I have the Pro-ject's volume control removed & jumpered so its being used as a straight power amp for my cans. Preamp is the preamp section of my vintage Yamaha receiver. It is a...- sunseeker888

Not sure that the LD MKII is right for my cans.
Which are 32-ohm Grado sr325i at the primarily. Thing is, they sound great together, but a simple A-B with a SS amp clearly reveals that these cans have more slam than the LD is capable of delivering. Not really its fault, since it does better with higher-z loads. FWIW, I've tried the amp...- sunseeker888

The Tube Amp Warm-Up Time Thread
First off, let me say that I am a believer in warming up gear before doing serious listening. I do not want people responding if they say it is not necessary. Head-fi is full of people who believe in warming up cd players, DACs, amps, etc and I would like to hear input from them. On both my...- sunseeker888

Reducing volume in the digital domain: any downside?
Since I use 32 ohm cans a lot, I keep my macbook volume at 50% so I can keep the volume pot of my amplifier above the 30% mark. This ensures better channel balance since I'm using the pot in its more linear region. But: Any downside in keeping digital volume attenuated? Do the bits get...- sunseeker888

Anyone know the Pro-ject Headbox's volume pot value?
Hey all. I've got a Pro-ject headbox MKII with a broken volume pot. I was wondering what value the potentiometer is..... I have since lost the part...stupid I know. I realize this isn't such a great amp, but I would like to keep it around as a spare.- sunseeker888

Sony SCD-CE595 v. iMic: Which has more Jitter?
Just looking for a quick answer on this. I am guessing neither are great sources, but that the Sony would have less jitter than the Griffin iMic out of my MBP's USB. (Hopefully, considering the price difference) I don't need a primer on Jitter, since I know enough about it...however, just...- sunseeker888

Taking sr325i on vacation?!
It just occured to me I'll be without audio for a week since I'm leaving for vay-cay soon (lol) on a caribbean cruise. My main concern is how i would safely carry the sr325i's since the pizzabox is really susceptible to getting crushed in my suitcase. As far as source/amp, I'd be fine...- sunseeker888
