Stax SR-80 with Stax SRM-1/MK-2 Pro amplifier

It's been a while since I've been here and I'd like to ask a Stax question but Stax topics seem to be dead so I'm asking my question here. If I've violated Head-fi protocol, please accept my apology. Can I power Stax SR-80 electret headphones with the Stax SRM-1/MK-2 Pro amplifier which has pro...

Differences between Gilmore Lite Versions 1 & 2

How can I determine whether a Gilmore Lite amplifier is version 1 or 2?   Do the differences make a sonic difference?   Thank you for taking the time to consider my questions.

    I have too many phones

    I no longer need these:   HD600, K501 (K701 pads included), K701, MDR-F1, AD700, SR325i, PK1, DT880 (250 OHM), SR-003, Ety-4P (S cable with many plugs).   All are mint in the box.   I have MDR-F1 & K501 (with K710 pads) duplicates that have never been opened.    I’d like to end...

HP amp and audio preamplifier -what's the output difference?

What’s the difference between the output of a headphone amplifier and the output of a powered audio preamplifier? Is the preamp output just less powerful or does it differ in other ways? Could the output of a headphone amplifier be modified so it could be used as an audio preamplifier? Thank you...

I need a good, cheap preamp from China

In the past I've bought Little Tube HP amps from China and have been very impressed with the sound and the price. Does anyone know where I can find similar deals for an audio preamp from China? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

My new Acculine A1 speakers sound like Grado headphones

I recieived these Acculine A1 speakers today and they're blowing me away! Acculine A1 I had a very specific SQ in mind when I ordered these and that's the Grado HP sound in a near field, desktop speaker. For me this is an exciting, in-your-face, sound with lots of transparency and PRAT...

    AV123 X-Head amp first impressions

I received this amp a week ago and I’m very impressed with it. What I like: 1) it's a very powerful amp. This is my first amp that drives the DT880 to its full potential. When I listen to a new amp I begin with the K501 and SR325i but this time I used the DT880 and I can’t stop listening...

AT AD2000 purchased from Musician's Friend for $499

I took advantage of the Musician"s Friend AT sale and purchased the AD2000 for $499. Needless to say I added express shipping for $13. I listen to classical music and have the AD700 which I think is one of the best bargains in classical phones so I've been anxious to hear how well AT's best open...

    Ety-4P comfort at last!

I’ve had the Ety ER-4P for 2 years and have never been able to wear them for more than 30 minutes before they became unbearably uncomfortable. I have a small box full of Ety tips including the Baby Blues and none of them ever worked for me until today. Today, I tried the 4P again with the small...

    Am I the only one?

I have the Little Dot MKIV SE and I’ve been using it as a tube pre amp with my other HP amps like the MinBox-E+ and the Headphonia. I think this improves the sound by giving these amps enough current so they don’t work too hard to produce a given level of sound. I now think of portable amps as...

Toshiba HD-A1/HD-XA1 as high end CD player for $100-130

Since yesterday I've been using my Toshiba HDXA1 as a CD player and it's one of the best I've ever heard. The NET consensus seems to be that when the Toshiba HD-A1/HD-XA1 is used as CD player it's as good as CD players costing between $2.5K (HDA1) to $6K (HDXA1). If you look at any of...

Using the LD MKIV SE preamp out to drive other HP amps

As the header suggests I'm using my MKIV Se's preamp out to drive other HP amps like the PreSonus HP4, PA2V2 and MIniBox-E+. My initial impressions are it makes all these amps sound more dynamic, quicker, and cleaner. My naif explanation for this is the amps don't need to amplify the signal...

Etymotics has a new ear tip

I saw it today at MacWorld on their new Bluetooth phone. It’s a gray-blue, fleshy, pea sized thing on a stalk. When I told them I like their phones but couldn’t wear them longer than 20 minutes they suggested I try it so they gave me two pair even though the tips are not yet for sale. The tip...

    Whassup with the search function?

Now when I do a search it's like a random walk down HeadFi memory lane. It didn't used to be this way or did it? Or is it just me?

    MiniBox-E+ battery charging questions

    1) What's this amp's proper charger connection sequence? Should I plug the amp into the charger before or after I plug the charger into the wall? I ask because the charging light doesn't seem to reflect the actual charging status and this may depend on the way it's plugged in. 2) Can I use...

Has anyone compared the AT AD2000 to the HD600, K701 or Lambda Pro?

Recently, I picked up AD700s and think they’re an excellent classical phone (and a good alternative if you want K501s but can’t find them) so naturally I’m curious about AD2000s but before I spend $500, I’d like to know if anyone’s compared them to HD600s, K701s or Lambda Pros which I own and...

Why so much anguish selecting classical phones?

All day long I've been listening to audiophile classical CDs on three wonderful phones costing about $100: The AKG K501s with K701 pads, Alessandro MS1s, and AT AD700s. I could be happy with any of them and this is true even when I compare them to my HD600s, AKG701s and Stax Lambda Pros. These...

Are any reasonably priced Stax earspeakers better than my Lambda Pros?

Would the SR-202, 303 or 404 earspeakers sound pleasantly different or even better than my 25 year old Lambda Pros driven by the SRM-1/MK-2 with pro and normal outputs? BTW, I listen mostly to classical music. (Rene Jacobs/Don Giovanni as I write this.)

    My twisted MS1 logic

Not many moons ago I auditioned Grado SR325is. I liked these phones but when I compared them to my HD600s and K701s and even my K501s I thought they’re lively and fun, but don’t image like classical phones should so I reluctantly returned them. Recently, I again got that itch and purchased...

MS1s aren't just for Rock and Roll anymore

Rather than consider MS1s to be a lesser version of Alessandro’s MS2s, I like to think they’re a very successful attempt to stuff the Alessandro house sound into a very lightweight, extremely comfortable (for me anyway), easily driven, elegant (look ma no buttons!) headphone that easily competes...

    Good buy and good luck

I’m not really leaving -I'm just trying to keep my wallet in my pants. When I was much younger it was something else, but that's another story. I fell down this rabbit hole 9 short months ago searching for reviews of Gary’s PA2V2 amp. Little did I know there are so many more HP amps. Actually, I...

K501s with K701s pads is an amazing transformation!

I know this has been posted several before but I'd like to share my joy. My primary motivation for making this switch was comfort. I don't use my K701s much because those lumps (tumors?) on the headband are unbearable so why not put those comfy K701s pads to work and use them on my dearly loved...

This is like shouting beer sucks at a kegger!

Read it anyway: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/12/fa...ring.html?8dpc Loud music (85 Db+) takes a power mower to the tiny hairs in your inner ear that are absolutely essential for hearing. Given the choice most people prefer being blind rather than deaf because when you're blind you...
