    3.5 mm jacks: 4 vs 3 conductors

    - my smartphone sports a 4-conductor jack - my notebook uses a  3-conductor jack - can't use 3-conductor jack on the smartphone (crappy sound) - can't use 4-conductor jack on the notebook (almost locked notebook's speakers!!!)   Conclusion: do I need specific-conductor earphone per each device?
