THE WATERCOOLER HEADPHONE EDITION – Headphones, Amps, DACs, and desktop/home audio related – a freewheeling discussion of gear, impressions, music, and musings.
It's been bugging me since yesterday when I mentioned the long forgotten hybrid headphone from back in the day. My Google-Fu is of the black belt variety and I was able to dig up the name.... ENIGMAcoustics Dharma D1000- https://headfonics.com/the-dharma-d1000-by-enigmacoustics/ However, I...- Monsterzero

When I first got into this hobby there was a hybrid headphone out that was FOTM for a bit but eventually the comments turned less than favorable on the SQ. I haven't seen it mentioned in years, and the name escapes me at the moment. EDIT: there is also the AKG K340, that is also a hybrid, but...- Monsterzero

I'm not sure they're worth the effort these days, as headphones have come a long ways since the OG AD2000 was released. Back then, they were up there with the Qualia in terms of pure speed, making them fantastic for thrash and speed metal. Now with planar headphones being ubiquitous, the speed...- Monsterzero

HE 500 and ATH AD2000 non X version. The former is easy enough to get again, but I'd probably never listen to it. The AD2000 is a brilliant headphone. Speedy, slightly dry with magic mods. Very amp picky. The reason I sold it is the clamp force. My goodness it was brutal on my dome- Monsterzero

The HD25 or HD250? Two different headphones. The bass on the HD250 is indeed the star of the show, especially the sub bass, however compared to the Atrium closed it sounds almost anemic. Of course we're talking about a gigantic price difference though. My review is already six years old?!? Geez...- Monsterzero

I'll add in the Sennheiser HD250 Linear 1. It came in 300 and 600 ohms variants, so both sound killer on OTL amps. Discontinued, and little patience is required to snag a good pair with original pads, as apparently these are quite seal dependant. Luckily I get a good seal with my pair, even...- Monsterzero

Noise? Like a hiss? Then back it off to 12 or 6, or even 3. Noise es no bueno. The +18 is for very insensitive headphones like susvara, HE6, Abyss 1266, etc.... The CC is relatively effecient, so no need to use the max gain for it.- Monsterzero

If you have a balanced cable, yes. There is a very noticable jump in sound quality going from SE to balanced on the v550.- Monsterzero

I have in-ceiling speakers throughout the house, which are driven by an old AVR and a Modi 2 MB. Roon is being used in that system now only, background music throughout the day and night. I literally listen to music from the time I get up until the time I go to sleep. I picked up a Denafrips...- Monsterzero

I camethisclose to buying an A8 awhile back but they took too long to get Roon certified and I went in another direction. They finally got their Roon certification just a few months ago and now an A10?!? I've now come full circle and keep Roon only for background music and am using a Musician...- Monsterzero

I've recently been turned onto The Slambovian Circus of Dreams, a band with roots in the Hudson Valley hailing from Sleepy Hollow, NY. (Yes, it's a real place :) ) Curious if anyone else is into these guys? I don't support them because they're local. I support them because they're damn good, and...- Monsterzero

Oh most def, but the open ZMFs stage better than the closed ZMFs. If he is willing to give up a little stage then I'd go Atrium closed all day. Even the Bokeh outstages many other company's open back headphones. I loaned it to a buddy who has owned the OG Clears and loved them for years. He said...- Monsterzero
