General Information
Orthodynamic design is something between dynamic and electrostatic headphones. Orthodynamic headphones have lower distortion than dynamic design, and can be driven by regular headphone amplifiers.
Retailing at $699, HE-5LE feature a similar spec to the first model HE-5 but the driver has been modified with the aim of improving bass frequencies, while driver cups are now made of plastic with a hexagon mesh. The cable is a removable design so that people can upgrade cables for HE-5.
Comparing to its elder model HE-5, HE-5LE sound signature is more balanced. Plastic cups on HE-5LE are more reliable when comparing to HE-5's wood cup. Benefit from plastic cup, HE-5LE is has lighter weight than HE-5. In addition, HE-5LE use OFC cable with 4pin balance XLR (same to K1000) and XLR to 6.5mm converter.
Potential customers have to be aware that HE-5LE is not easy to drive. It will not be used on most portable devices such as an iPod. Customers need to have a decent headphone amplifier with a powerful output to drive HE-5 to get its full potential. The dedicated vacuum-tube headphone amplifiers HiFiMAN retail for $399.
