If it's a battery powered amplifier, the battery could be weak.  You could check by trying another pair of headphones or a new battery.

I can say for sure that the Grado HP-1000 series diaphragms are not paper.  I have seen them, and they are a polymer.   As far as durability goes, you can easily play them at levels that will liquify your eardrums and they will not mind.
