You're looking at the wrong statistic; low-sensitivity planars want more current over raw wattage. MJ3 has a power supply more akin to that from a speaker amp than one for headphones; current is not a problem. Few planars are harder to drive than the HE-6 and MJ3 drives those quite well so long...

As a new owner myself, I don't think you'll have too many issues with power. Right now I'm running my modded HE-6 6-screw in SE Class A mode, high gain, no feedback via the balanced XLR output, volume knob is around 1:30, and these most-notoriously power hungry of cans are sounding better...

The headphone output is always activated, even when the preamp out is engaged. Yes, the volume knob adjusts the preamp volume, as does the gain switch.
