During a 60 mile motorcycle ride home in a downpour, I learned that my old jacket was not even close to waterproof. I had water leaking in the seams within the first 60 seconds! It wouldn't have been so bad if I had some wind protection, but my new bike has literally none.

There are no stupid questions... The part you are referring to is a lock release. When you insert an XLR cable into the jack, the cable is "locked" in place so it is not accidentally removed. Press that tab and the cable can be removed.
