Someone just starting with AVRs I would recommend using C and the CodeVisionAVR C compiler. This book covers AVRs, C and the CodeVisionAVR C compiler. The hardware tools for AVRs are pretty reasonable. Prices for Atmel's own tools are: programmer: $30, development kit: $80, in circuit...

I finished the amp boards, which was straigtforward. I've done some testing and I haven't noticed any problems. I'll try to post some pics next weekend.
