I think a signal to rear line-out is coming directly from OV4627 pre-amp, and to front headphone-out goes from OV4627 through MAX97220, which has more power for low impedance load but more distortion. It's absolutelly normal when pre-amp has better sound for use with hi-class external.

For example the internal digital filter of DSD1793 can be disabled and the DAC is then paired with the external DSP processor. Usually its presence determines the class of the device.

How about battery life? I didn't find anything about it in the specs.
