Went with a xonar dx. Got it off fleabay for $37, not to shabby I'd say ;) Ordering my vali and dt990s today. Woot.

  Awesome - so it's as simple as the surround signal is already in the line, and doesn't get lost due to the external amp. Good to know! Since I don't need the onboard amp, is there a better card alternative for headphone surround?   Thanks for the help!
