Zhaolu made quite splash here in the mid 2000s with their DAC/Preamp/Headphone amplifiers and you can search to find out more. Some users modified their units in many ways and one was to modify the analog output stage with a very high quality, very popular at the time fully discrete analog output stage called the ZAP Filter which was performed on this unit. The blue PCB in the photo is the ZAP Filter discrete analog output stage and it has its own power supply which is the toroidal transformer and the board next to it. It's still a great sounding DAC! In doing this modification the headphone amp/preamp parts were removed hence the volume knob is not in the circuit. Cirrus Logic 4398 DAC chip. Toslink and Coaxial digital inputs. Please note that the XLR Balanced outputs are not hooked up. I don't use balanced connections so the RCA outputs are only connected but you can wire up the XLR's to the board if you wish. At one time the ZAP filter alone sold for about $300 and the Zhaolu DAC around $400.
