Just received my HE400se today, haven’t listened to headphones since the very early 70s, and was very pleasantly surprised. Early days yet, have some balanced 4.4 cables coming, but so far they sound nice. It’s a different experience that IEMs for sure, warm ears and all that bass.

That's strange, I have the HE400SE V1 and it certainly plays loud enough(very loud) with my SMSL SH-6 which on the spec sheet is similar to the Heretic. And V1 vs V2 looks to be the same impedance and sensitivity(25 Ohms, 91dB ).
edit. Maybe your source(SMSL SU-1) isn't driving the Heretic with high enough level output? Try some other source which may be louder.
