Comment by 'ckhirnigs113' on listing 'Mod House Argon MK2 (MassDrop T-X0 Blacked-Out Version) *Rare*'
I’ll try to do a little comparison and see how they compare. I haven’t plugged the Argon into my new Aegis yet, so that will be interesting as well. I’ll report back!- ckhirnigs113

Agreed. I think they’d be happy to see a new face interested in tubes. The guy at the music shop is unlikely to have the same attitude unless I plan to buy something.- ckhirnigs113

Yeah, it was cheap enough to take the chance. I’ve found a local music shop with a tube tester as well as a an “antique radio society” that meets every Tuesday and Saturday. One way or another I’m going to find out if I got a good deal or not.- ckhirnigs113

Well I reached out to the seller of my "matched pair" of GE 6550's and explained how they were pretty far from being matched. He agreed to allow me to return them. I was surprised to be honest. I'll be more careful in the future. I stumbled across two listings for single Tung-Sol 6550's...- ckhirnigs113

Lesson learned! They sound good in the Aegis even if they don’t match exactly. I’ll either end up selling them or trying to find one more of each variety so I can have two pairs that at least have the same construction and height. Luckily I have lots of other great tubes to choose from. Right...- ckhirnigs113

I just put my pair of GE 6550A’s in tonight for the first time. I noticed the two tubes are not the same height. One base is slightly taller than the other. They were a “matched pair”, but I assume this means they were produced at different times. I also noticed one has spot welded plates and...- ckhirnigs113

Luckily for me those Cossor 53KU rectifiers sold before I had a chance to spend more money on tubes. I still have a lot of tubes here that I haven’t tried in my Aegis yet, so I should probably try to avoid buying any more for a while. I won’t hold my breath on that one. Speaking of tubes, I’m...- ckhirnigs113

I read it might be more like a GZ33 which isn't listed as compatible. There's a lot of conflicting info out there.- ckhirnigs113

Does anyone know if the 53KU rectifier is safe to use in the Aegis? In my research, I read the reservoir capacitor should not exceed 16μF for this rectifier. Isn't the "reservoir capacitor" in the Aegis 22μF?- ckhirnigs113

Everyone seems to get them from @Deyan. I got mine on eBay, but I’ll probably go to him next time since I’ve heard nothing but good things about the quality of his work.- ckhirnigs113

@L0rdGwyn Is it ok to leave my headphones plugged into the Aegis all the time? I’m wondering if there’s any chance of doing damage when turning the amp on and off. To be clear, I have been unplugging my headphones when putting new tubes in the amp for the first time. In all other situations, I...- ckhirnigs113

Schiit Mjolnir 3 - Impressions Thread
Hate to do it, but after buying the ZMF Aegis I need to sell my MJ3. It’s the best solid state amp I’ve ever had, but I have gone all in on tubes. Sorry for the shameless plug here, but feel free to shoot me a PM if you’re looking for an MJ3.- ckhirnigs113

I just got a ZMF Aegis, so I’m all in on tubes for the foreseeable future. The MJ3 could have easily been the last headphones amp I ever bought, but I couldn’t resist the lure of the Aegis. I won’t be surprised if I end up buying another MJ3 down the line. It’s that good! My MJ3 went back to...- ckhirnigs113

I got a bunch of these same adapter as well, but I’ve only used the ones for my EL38’s. They seem to work fine, so I’ll consider myself lucky! I also rolled in the Ei KT90’s for the first time. So far, all I can report is that they’re functional, and they don’t suck. I’ll try to add some more...- ckhirnigs113

I was in the same boat. With much trepidation, I listed my Ash Auteur for sale trying to save up for the Aegis. Luckily for me, I priced it way too high to find a buyer, haha. Glad to see there’s another Aegis owner out there enjoying an Auteur! I went back and forth on whether or not to “upgrade” my OG to a Classic. My OG sounds so good on the Aegis now that I can say I’m no longer tempted. That’s not to say I wouldn’t like to hear a Classic on my Aegis. Maybe one day…- ckhirnigs113

I have done a little research on these Ei KT90 tubes, and there appear to be 4 versions. I picked up a quad recently to try in my Aegis (haven’t put them in yet). With my current tube roll, I’m exclusively using the 6.35mm jack and the high impedance (31 ohms) option with my two ZMF dynamics. It seems to add that little something special. With my Meze Elite (32 ohms), I’m using the XLR jack and the low impedance (11 ohms) option, which is equal to the...- ckhirnigs113

Just posted my impressions in the Aegis thread but had to put something here as well. My OG Auteur has officially scaled up to a new level of amazing! Thought I’d give a little more details on the Aegis/OG Auteur combo. It’s amazingly good! Not sure if it’s this new tube roll, the extra burn in time on the amp itself or what, but my Auteur has never sounded this good before. I also agree that the stock tube setup sounds really excellent in the Aegis. It was well-chosen by Zach and Keenan. That being said, I think 99% of people buying a tube amp in this price range will not be sticking with the stock setup long term. The temptation to take things to the next level...- ckhirnigs113
