Tubes may be labeled U52 but may actually be a 5U4G as they are equivalent. But the only real U52 was made by GEC / Marconi Osram.

Thanks, yeah I've put six rolls through it already, getting developed at my local lab now. I sent off the Elmar 50mm for a CLA and in the meantime I splurged a bit on a very clean 35mm Summicron v3, probably from around 1975. Might get it cleaned up too once I get the 50mm back. I've heard...

    L0rdGwyn's DIY Audio

Got the MC step up transformers mounted and wired up the D3a input stage. This is a heavy little box. Probably one or two more days of work left. I'll get back at it this weekend.

    L0rdGwyn's DIY Audio

I finished wiring up the power supply chassis today, excluding the umbilical jack as that will need to be done after the umbilical. Given this phono uses very high gm tubes, special measures need to be taken to avoid oscillation. That means each tube has its own dedicated heater regulator, and...

A U50 is compatible in Aegis. Type 80 the input capacitor listed will vary by datasheet, from 10-20uF. But the tube was listed as a U50, so from my standpoint it should have been fine in Aegis.

    L0rdGwyn's DIY Audio

I've found some time to do DIY things this week. First, I decided I wanted to make a change to the input stage of the HY69 amp, changing it from LED bias to cathode bias. With LED bias, the treble and upper midrange clarity and detail was astonishing, probably the best I have heard from a tube...

Right, 5U4G is completely fine for Aegis, no concerns as far as the input capacitor goes.

Just going by the specs on the website (I don't see a datasheet, please direct me if you find one), it should be fine, but if @zach915m is having issues with fuses blowing, that gives me pause to recommend them. I personally don't spend that much on any tube, just isn't worth the risk in my...

Close enough. In terms of robustness, really only rectifiers spec'd for 120-125mA are going to be pushed, anything spec'd higher than that shouldn't sweat. Each output tube is drawing somewhere between 50-60mA (for higher power outputs like EL34, KT66, KT88, etc.) and the 6SL7 combined draw...

If the tube was cold and there is debris inside, it's possible the filament burnt out, in which case the rectifier is dead. I wouldn't recommend putting any questionable tube in the amp, you don't want to cause real damage that needs repair, like burning out a capacitor or a resistor due to a...

Well, the tube is labeled as a U50/80, but they are not exactly equivalent. A U50 has a higher input capacitor tolerance than an 80, so perhaps it didn't like the 22uF input capacitor and could not handle the current. That's my best guess. Could also just be that it is a very old tube. Tubes...

That's a type 80, close to a 5Y3, but has a UX4 base, so you would need an adapter.

I think that scale really depends on what OTL you are referring to. Some OTLs are very "tubey" and lush, but others can be very clean and neutral.

Yeah getting into film has made me love photography again, probably for the same reason I love tubes: technically imperfect, but therein lies its beauty  Not to mention, like tubes, it is extremely inconvenient and expensive. These are my top criteria when choosing a hobby.
