I know how most of you like rockbox on your ipods.
The zune has yet to get any new operating system. A linux distribution could give you the full potential of the zune's wifi and help deal with drm restrictions. I don't work on creating linux for the zune, but I think that a lot of people here could. If you own a zune, and want to unlock its full potential, try to help the place out.
You can go to http://www.zune-linux.com/

nah, I will wait for all the firmware patches and updates MS will release for the G1 Zune. Maybe in 3-5 years, if this Zune is still in working condition I will test the Linux waters. Thanks anyway.

What a waste of a post. I wish I could help out but I wouldn't know where to begin. Plus I am awaiting a Zune USB cable to sync/charge.

Why a wasteful post ? My Zune is brand new. Do you really think I want to brick my brand new player just for testing linux on it ? come on. Let the original manufacturer develop is hardware then when they stop supporting it, you as an owner have the rights to seek any good alternative you want.

Or do you think it is easy to everyone to fork the 220+ USD to buy a newborn media playing platform and from the begining starts doing mods, hacks and everything on it.

BTW, as you are a ZVM owner, go to the Creative forums and ask them to support RockBox and see what happens ?

ok ok, the whole point of the zune linux is to let the users decide what they want in the device. Do you want to surf the internet on your zune? With linux, im sure it could be possible. Are you frustrated by the lack of a clock on the zune? That would be one of the first steps. DRM holding your music back?
I think that linux on the zune would make it by far the best mp3 player ever. Comon people, think of the possibilities! If you can do anything to help, stop by their forums.

ummm...Im fine with the Zune as media and video player
Surf the web: How ? not free or enough hotspots on my country. Battery eater.
lack of a clock: I got a cellphone with me all time with the damn time and date of the year.
DRM holding who ?: Are you kidding....BT FTW on 3rd World countries where RIAA can't grab you by the...balls.

Bring me a RB with the same or better GUI than the default with better battery life and I will mod my Zune sooner than later.

I don't get it, you say you never want to use alternate OS's on your zune, but then you turn around and say you want to use rockbox? Pick a side!

Besides, you would be surprised how many people buy things and start modding/hacking the thing up right away

You don't have to be a complete d-bags to the guy just because he plugged a site. These guys bust their a** trying to add features which should have been present from the beginning and they get crap? Come on.

It only seems to be one person who is crapping on the OP in this thread, which is nothing new with this particular person

on-topic, any instance where people create custom firmwares gets a plus in my book, partly because it brings out the full potential of the hardware, but mostly in awe that people are able to do this in the first place.

RockBox IS NOT AN OS! It's an alternative firmware.

I think by definition, RockBox is an OS even though on their website they call it firmware. Either way...Rockbox or Linux on a Zune are going to provide similar results, better use of wireless, less DRM trouble, and more codecs.

Maybe I'll get a Zune to play with

firmware is the way it is stored. That just means its stored in the ROM.
RockBox is an OS (operating system).

Wikipedia defines "operating system" as "set of computer programs that manage the hardware and software resources of a computer." I don't think that "firmware" and "operating system" are mutually exclusive.

In any event, back on topic, I think that if someone gets Linux running on a Zune, Rockbox won't be far behind.
