whilst surfing amazon, i did a check of john zorn. seems that he recently turned 50, and is putting out a series of discs recorded (at a series of concerts) in honor. the first was listed, and had one very nice review. wandering in borders, well there it was. and only 15.99 (low for a borders price).

this is mark feldman/violin, erik friedlander/cello, greg cohen/bass.

i've always kind of liked zorn, although some of his stuff is screechy and atonal. so far, not this stuff. tends towards his jewish jazz side. nicely recorded, esp. for those who are into acoustic bass. there is lots of that. and doesn't sound like cohen is on a pickup; sounds like a mic.

on the PX-100s, nice and phat.

if you like marty ehrlich's dark woods, you'll certainly like this. friedlander is common to both.

You should check out all of the Masada stuff. The recordings are amazing, as are the performances. I think Masada or the romance stuff is THE place to start for a Zorn newbie.

He definitely does the squeeks and honks, but I think it's in perfect contrast to the moody swing of the meat of the song.

If you're not into the atonal stuff, pick up Masada Guitars. Frisell, Ribot and Sparks playing Masada tunes on solo guitar. It's excellent.

i was at one of his shows last year for his 50th birthday.
he performed every night for a month, i think, at tonic.

i saw him perform with Electric Masada (including marc ribot)...
unbelievable couple of sets! zorn had this big grin on his face all night.
you could tell he was happy with the performance.

i didn't realize they were releasing this stuff. i'll have to check it out.

They aren't arena bands, but I guess the double billing is enough to sell the required seats to book the show. That should be a blast.
