Redwood Burls finally arrived after about a three month wait.
I immediately swapped the suede for an all leather configuration with a leather crescent band and black BBB strap. Replaced the bop to titan mesh and added a brand new pair of Verite lambskin perfs. So far so good!
Both the Cocobolo and Bubinga sounded considerably better to be honest. Not sure if thats just my memory playing tricks on me or if the three solid days of A/Bing against my Caldera & AC are making the Redwoods sound worse than they are.
Unfortunately I don’t have an OTL anymore and the Cayin doesn’t really synergize that well with Aeolus.

Very interesting - I have a few sets where I'm preferring harder woods, but my redwood burl VO sounds amazing and I like it more than any other wood for that headphone. I'm going to be getting a few other models in redwood burl and can't wait to see what the difference in sound is. The wood really does make a difference.
I have a stabilized maple Aeolus currently but will be getting a cocobolo Aeolus to compare.

Most of the time my preference leans to hard woods as well but my Caldera Redheart sounds phenomenal and it's a softer wood. On Aeolus I vastly prefer harder woods as their driver isn't that resolving and the harder wood gives a bit more of an incisiveness on the trailing ends of tones. My dream wood for Aeolus is a Blackwood but finding them is very difficult.

Agreed. The redheart sets I heard (both an AO and a CO) at CanJam had something about them that sounded fantastic. Blacker background, more clean and less bright than the stabilized maple and cherry sets I heard. Amboyna burl sounds similar from memory.
Redwood burl sounds more lifted in the upper mids and treble compared to the redheart and amboyna burl, but more of a rounded, pleasant brightness compared to the maple and cherry sets. I love how it puts the vocals more forward yet throws a bigger stage.
Hi everyone, I'm about to order some new pads for the Aeolus, I'm undecided between the Caldera Suede Ultra Perf or the Hybrid Perf, I'm currently using Universe Suede Perf!
my interest is very much is the caldera ultra perf suede any opinion on this?
(I use ventilated mesh)

let's say I hate leather, and I always prefer fabric/suede materials, universe suede perf which I like, and zach told me that the calderas make them brighter and more linear!

I used the universe suedes for 2-3 years with the Aeolus. I never liked the stock universe lambskin pads on the Aeolus--it sounded too mid-bassy and warm for me. The universe suedes took a big step in the right direction IMHO, cutting down the midbass bump somewhat and bringing up the upper mids and treble a bit. Still a warm, musical sound, but it resolved better. The Verite perforated lambskins took the Aeolus in another big step for me. I can heartily recommend both sets of pads with this headphone.
There’s an earlier discussion where the venting and mesh were changed around the same time the default pad went from Aeolus to Universe. I know mine is the newer version, and I really liked the stock Universe suede. The Aeolus pad and even the Universe lamb were a bit too bassy, muddy even. But remember newer version, personal taste. The suede Ultra Perf has probably been on the longest and become my default. I did try the BE2 hybrid lately and enjoy it enough I haven’t switched back yet. I also prefer the feel of the suede pads.

I used the Universe suede for the first 2 years and once I tried the Caldera suede ultra perfs those stayed on. The Universe sound almost a bit muffled after going back to them. These pads just make all the ZMFs I put them on sound more open/expansive and tonally are still similar to universe suedes for me. Have never heard the hybrids though.
