ZMF Aeolus Impressions thread

Zach has used African Blackwood on well over 100 units. He’s even had a full run of Blackwood VC’s and VO’s when they were the flagship. They aren’t that rare in the higher lineup but very rare with Aeolus.
I am fortunate to have a VO in Blackwood I purchased when it was a LTD offering for it and the VC. Love how it looks and sounds, and the wood has such a beautiful, subtle look when you see it in person. It's very hard to photograph Blackwood properly, so it's hard to get a really great picture of it!

Very nice! :gs1000smile: Did it come with the BBB strap, or did you add it?
This was my Aeolus originally (if that wasn’t clear), so I can answer. It was from ZMF November 2020, so I added the BBB strap later on when it came out, as well as the crescent headband. Both made comfort leagues better than the old headband, which wasn’t bad at all.

I’ve been considering the BBB for my Aeolus. I really like it on my VO. It’s from April 2022 so it already has the Crescent strap, but the BBB wasn’t out yet. It’s so hard to pick the right color though. What goes best with Canarywood and aged copper hardware?

I’ve seen a light brown strap used for some of the stabilized/resin sets before, but it’s not one of the options on the BBB page. I bet that would look nice with canary wood (and would look nice with my Ambrosia Maple Auteur Classics too), you’d just want to email Zach and see if he can get you one.

Of course. I didn’t even think of this. How weird. Asking for special treatment is usually my go to. I’m not sure how I feel about that. Is this progress or regression?

Ha! Probably a little of both

Whats a good pad if you want a more even tonality with filled in mids like uni perf suede, but want a little more bass presence and punch/texture?
I tried Uni lamb, uni hybrid and be2 lamb. Feel like universe hybrid is decent but still feel the need to search around more before settling.

Be2 lambskin perf has solid even tone with respect to mids and treble, but is surprisingly warmer than all the uni pads to me, and way too boomy for my tastes.

So how are the be2 hybrid, be2 suede and caldera suede/lamb pad options?

i haven’t taken off the Caldera ultra perf suede since I put it on. Kept coming back to Uni suede before that. Uni lamb was warmer, and Aeolus pads were too much. BE2 hybrid was really nice paired with the A20. Some pads work better with certain amps. They must balance each other out somehow. Caldera ultra perf lamb were nice too, but I like those best on my VO.

Nice, Caldera Ultra Perf Suede might be my next choice then. I get a feeling none of the lambskin pads are gonna really work for me tonally on Aeolus. Suede seems to provide the right mids presence.

Very much depends on what you are looking for in terms of sound signature. For many of us, Aeolus is the best ZMF model for that warm, smooth and lush sound signature coupled with intimacy; and where details and resolution is secondary. So the majority seem to have found the sweet spot with uni suede pad. Suede in general makes the musical notes more rounded, less edgy and perky. The Caldera ultra perf suede pad provides better staging and air with slightly more neutrality.

I had the perforated suedes on my Atticus for several years. Listen to them only occasionally, so the pads are perfect.

Early this year I switched back to the OG Verite pads, perforated lambskins that are now discontinued. I think those Verite pads are the best I've ever heard w/the Aeolus. This headphone is always slightly warm, resonant and romantic sounding. The Verite pads put those things on a leash more than other pads, but they're still there and very good to hear.

Pretty sure the current pads that most resemble OG Verites are the BE2 perforated lambskins. If I didn't have the Verites, those are the pads I'd try.

I found the be2 lambskin perf to be quite bloomy and thick, if the verite pad is similar it wouldnt be for me but it definitely seems interesting, I've seen other recommend it as well

Does anyone know if the solid mesh or radial vented mesh was the og mesh for the Aeolus?
