I bought one of those zerostat guns for my LPs. I have a really dusty apartment (typical for Los Angeles, the dust just won't go away) and thought this would help quite a bit. I zapped a couple of records last night, but there was dust all over the record within a minute of putting it on the platter. I'm going to do a bit of preventative maintainance and sweep every surface in the room, but in the meantime, is there a reason why the dust would still be attracted to the LP? I tried the test tip and it works. Does anyone have any pointers on this? I'm wondering if I'm doing it right. How far away should the gun be, how long do you hold the trigger, etc.

Hold the tip very close - about 1/2 inch away. The device works as you pull the trigger, not as you hold it, so once you've pulled it in all the way you can release it. Make sure to pull slowly - if you hear a clicking, you are pulling too fast. Release the trigger before you remove the device, if you don't you are only performing half a cycle and you will leave your record charged with static it didn't have before. It's a great device, and does wonders.

So what part of the record do I point it at? Also, do I release it as slowly as I pull it?

Yes slowly release. I usually hold mine about 3 inches from an lp close to the middle of the disc. You might also want to use the gun to zap your turntable.

They can also be useful with cd's. There can be a high static charge on a cd which can collect dust or potentially pull the laser mechanism.

These guns are surprisingly powerfull. If you look at the tip in the dark you will see a blue flame. Also you can smell ozone coming off the tip.

When these guns first came out they were demonstrated with a scantily clad female model who was covered with balloons held on her body by static charge. The gun was pointed at her and the balloons fell away.
