I'm getting a pair of Beyerdynamic DT-990 Pro 250 ohm. I'm also looking for an amp to go with it. I was hoping to get a amp/DAC combo like the Fiio E7, but from what I've read you cannot bypass the iPod's dac even with a L9 or L3 LOD.
Is that right? If so would it still be worth getting an amp/dac combo to use the dac when listening on my computer and when on my ipod simply use it as an amp?
If the Fiio E7 only acts as an amp for iPods will a LOD improve the audio quality any?
Sorry, I'm new to this so I have a lot of questions. Thanks.

You got it, you can use the FiiO E07K's DAC & amp with a computer and the amplifier only with the iPod and you want to connect an LOD cable from the iPod's LOD port to the line-input on the E07K.

Alright. Thanks for the reply. Could you explain what the LOD cable does? Does the IPod have an amplifier that can be bypassed by using outputting through the LOD port? Thanks for the clarification.

The LOD cable allows you to get an analog audio signal (music feed) from the iPod, before that audio signal has gone thru the iPods headphone amplifier, this provides a slightly cleaner analog audio signal, to feed into the E7, then you would have if you used the iPod headphone output to feed a signal into the E7.
Usually better to use only one amplifier and not daisy chain amplifiers.

Ok, cool, that's what I thought. Sorry if it was a silly question. I guess I'll be going with either a E7 or E07K then. Thanks for your help.

You might consider selling off the iPod Touch and getting a FiiO X3.
Plug your headphones straight into the X3.

Not sure if FiiO has released the firmware that allows the X3 to work as a DAC/Amp off a computer?

^^ The problem with that is that the X3 is a terrible front end for listening to music.  I have one, and my continued inability to get it to scan my music properly leads me to the Touch far more often.

The good news is that if your Touch is running iOS 7, then you can get  digital out from it using a Lightning CCK.
