Now that I have a decent system for my tunes, I'm hearing things that I've never heard in tracks before. Little chimes, a riff, creaking stages, etc. Those were "aha" moments for me.

What was your "aha" moment?

i had one today when i found a Nagaoka M11 cartridge (in the loft) and set up the Thorens TD165 properly with my new scales and protractor.
i was listening to the talking heads once in a lifetime lp when my speakers disappeared. the best thing i have heard my speaker rig do to date.

I have had it for every upgrade I have made

MDR-7506>Etymotic ER4P> (more of a side step than upgrade) HF-1> Stax SR404 >K1000

Best upgrade was K1000 for sure. It is that much better than anything else I own. The ER4P was a great upgrade too since it puts so much emphasis on detail.

Most memorable moment with a recording was hearing the DJ Koze album Kosi Comes Around on the ER4P. Detail and aural texture of that album with the etymotics is excellent.

Two such moments come to mind:

#1 I had found an Audionics BT-2 preamp at a pawn shop, put it in my system, and ran my VCR into it. Later, I watched "Last of the Mohicans" with my stereo for the sound. I don't remember the power amp I was using, but it may have been a Proton AA-1150 [the main subject of my favorite audio horror story

], and the speakers were Celestion Ditton 25's. Came the scene in which the French were using mortars against the British fort. Awesome!

#2 Stax SR-5's this time. I was listening to the Finnish band Loituma, and a track came on, and I sensed, not really heard, the singer's mouth open before any notes came out. Shivers!

Oh, wow that is so cool. I think know that feeling from concerts but have never experienced it on headphones. Concerts might not count because of the visual component though.

Almost too many to count. One of the most recent was with the K-1000. I had it jacked in to the Conrad-Johnson MV52 and was playing Willie Nelson's "Stardust" SACD. I love Willie and that's one of the finest recordings I own. I closed my eyes, lost awareness of the headphones and blissed out.
