Limited to a single disc which songs would you choose for your compilation of A favorite artist or band?

Under 80 minutes & of course No mp3 cheating.

Don't say you can't do it because you will if you're going to a deserted island for 3 months.

(This would be extra tough for the Pink Floyd or Grateful Dead fan I think).

Edit:In a hurry, I misspelled 'compilation' in the thread title!

My favorite band is AC/DC
I have made three discs of my favorite songs by them. If I had to compress those down to one disc, .........................

1. Back in Black
2. Whole Lotta Rosie
3. Money Talks
4. Highway To Hell
5. It's A Long Way To The Top
6. High Voltage
7. Give It Up
8. Heatseeker
9. Gone Shootin'
10. Back Seat Confidential
11. Stiff Upper Lip
12. You Shook Me All Night Long
13. Who Made Who
14. Thats The Way I Wanna Rock N Roll
15. Can't Stand Still
16. Girl's Got Rythm
17. Rock N Roll Singer
18. Hells Bells

With out checking the time right now, this should be fairly close to filling up an 80 minute CD. My list is pretty much in the order I would want there too.

I've done quite a few artist compilations for myself. Sometimes it's nice to just pop in one CD and hear all your favorites instead of dragging out 5 or 6 albums and jumping around, especially on the road. Yo La Tengo, Pavement, Ben Harper, Bob Marley, Brian Eno, Cat Power, Luna and many others. But since I was just talking about PJ Harvey in another thread, I'll post that one below which has songs from 7 albums covering Dry to Stories From The City....

PJ Harvey: 1992-2000

1. O Stella
2. Dress
3. Sheela-Na-Gig
4. Plants And Rags
5. Water
6. Rid of Me
7. Missed
8. Yuri-G
9. Man-Size
10. M-Bike
11. To Bring You my Love
12. Teclo
13. Down by The Water
14. The Dancer
15. That Was My Veil
16. Angelene
17. The Wind
18. A Perfect Day Elise
19. This Is Love
20. Beautiful Thing
21. Good Fortune

There is simply no way to give justice to the beautiful and talented Chan Marshall in one disc. But this is my sad attempt. Every song of hers is amazing...at least to me. Just amazing.

01 Cat Power Rockets
02 " Satisfaction
03 " I Don't Blame You
04 " Nude as the News
05 " Metal Heart
06 " Cross Bones Style
07 " I Found A Reason
08 " Still In Love
09 " Wild is the Wind
10 " Colors and the Kids
11 " Speak For Me
12 " In This Hole
13 " Maybe Not
14 " He War
15 " Peking Saint
16 " Good Woman [Bootleg]

i constantly make compilations of my favourite bands since their "greatest hits" package are always not up to par. i also like everything in chronological order unless the compilation has a valid reason for not having a chronological order, like Pet Shop Boys' "PopArt." anyway... here's a few of my faves:

New Order:
01 Ceremony (re-recorded 12" w/ Gillian Gilbert)
02 Everything's Gone Green
03 Temptation (Original 1982 12")
04 Blue Monday
05 Confusion (Original 1983 12")
06 Thieves Like Us
07 The Perfect Kiss (12")
08 Bizarre Love Triangle (Original Album Version)
09 True Faith (Shep Pettibone Remix Edit)
10 Touched By the Hand of God
11 Round and Round (7")
12 Regret
13 Crystal (edit)
14 Here to Stay

i have to say 14 songs, even when well chosen, isn't a fair amount of songs to tell the New Order story, so i'm planning to make a two disc compilation with all their singles, with the songs grouped into two separate themes, like PSB's "PopArt."

The Human League:
01 Being Boiled
02 Empire State Human
03 Marianne
04 Boys and Girls
05 The Sound of the Crowd
06 Love Action (I Believe in Love)
07 Open Your Heart
08 Don't You Want Me
09 Mirror Man
10 (Keep Feeling) Fascination!
11 The Lebanon
12 Together in Electric Dreams
13 Life On Your Own
14 Louise
15 Human
16 Heart Like A Wheel
17 Tell Me When
18 One Man in My Heart
19 Stay With Me Tonight
20 All I Ever Wanted

Blur:
01 She's So High
02 There's No Other Way
03 Popscene
04 For Tomorrow
05 Chemical World
06 Girls and Boys
07 To The End
08 Parklife
09 End of a Century
10 Country House
11 The Universal
12 Charmless Man
13 Beetlebum
14 Song 2
15 On Your Own
16 MOR
17 Tender
18 Coffee and TV
19 No Distance Left to Run
20 Music is My Radar

I'm not even sure who my all-time favorite band is, but I did recently put together such a collection for a friend of one of my current favorite bands, Curve:

1.Fait Accompli
2.No Escape from Heaven
3.Wish You Dead
4.Split Into Fractions
5.Missing Link
6.Left of Mother
7.Chinese Burn
8.Sweetback
9.Beyond Reach
10.The Birds They Do Fly
11.You Don't Know
12.Hell Above Water
13.Chainmail
14.Till the Cows Come Home
15.Cold Comfort (Deepsky remix)

Oh, and nice New Order compilation, bong. I'm not sure I have all those versions on CD, but I might try putting together something close to that...

(I probably would have swapped something for "Unreadable Communication", but it's nice to see "Beyond Reach" on there -- that's one for the repeat button.)

I'm still working on mine.

thanks SunByrne! i think the two most important songs on that New Order tracklisting is the original 12 inch versions of "Temptation" and "Confusion." both are fairly hard to find on CD ("Temptation a bit easier to find since it's on the "1981-1982 EP," but both are on the "Retro" box set), but IMO both original versions are better than the 1987 versions that appear on "Substance."

A buddy of mine also into Curve chided me severely for not including "Superblaster." I was close on "Left of Mother" vs. "Unreadable Communication" and "Superblaster," but I've always liked "Left of Mother" a little more.

Seen the new Way of Curve double CD? Disc 1 is, roughly speaking, the band's own answer to this question. Of course, I prefer mine...

I've not heard those versions at all, I don't think. Is this gonna cost me a box set? Grrr...

Yeah, it was tough to choose! I'd like to see DarkAngel take a crack at Opeth. Would he be forced to disregard his beloved 'Morningrise' where every track is nearly 20 minutes long? Or Pink Floyd (the member) try Pink Floyd (the band)! It's like doing a crossword of numbers.

BTW my 80:52
evil_smiley.gif
backfired.
I tried it and it wouldn't fit!
I dumped 'Songless Bird'.
