I just plugged the mini into the adapter to charge it up. No response at all. I unplugged it and tried the menu/play reset. Nothing. I plugged it into my powerbook, still dead. Any ideas? It was working fine about an hour ago. I was only topping it off for a trip. Funny how that works.

Did you switch the hold switch, before the menu/play reset? If not, you must turn this switch on (red), then to off first, If so, there is a diagnostic mode that I will try to track down. I simply cannot remember it at the moment.

Yes, I tried that a couple of times. No response at all. Is there a hidden reset button anywhere? Wishful thinking.

Whoa! I held down menu+play+select and it woke up!

This trick is probably in the manual, which I can't seem to find. Oddly enough the info for my first gen is right on top of the appropriate file (stack). I suppose the house gremlins are just having some fun with me.

Whew, I was sweating that. I could have survived the trip with the laptop and old G1 ipod, but working out on Monday having to listen to hiphop on the gym stereo (elevator speakers) was a frightening thought.

Thanks for the input.

Menu+Play resets the iPod/iPod mini.. glad it worked and there wasn't something seriously wrong with it!

When I first got my iPod (used), my remote didn't work. I was pretty bummed and called Apple, they said they'd send an empty box and I was to send the remote in. I never did get that box, but I learned of the Menu+Play reset when my iPod wasn't responding to anything, and it fixed both problems. Been using the remote ever since... despite the wire fraying problem and all...

When in doubt, the reset always seems to do the trick.

I did not catch my mistake in my original post. The mini reset is Menu + Select, held simultaneously for 5 to 6 seconds. Toggling the Hold switch is not always needed, but Apple includes this step as well before the Menu + Select combo.

Hmmm, that is strange. I have always used menu+play on this unit to get it to recover. Is one a soft reset vs a wakeupdammit? I think it went into a "safe" mode due to the adapter surge with a near full charge.

My new approach is to hold down everything for 10 seconds.
