I use the E500's with the pair of yellow foam sleeves that it came with (among others). Now, I am confused whether I should go with the new black ones or the yellow ones that I've tried before.

My questions:

a) what is the difference in the sound quality and isolation of black foam sleeves when compared with yellow?

b) what size should I get? Yellow came in just one size!
(since I didn't get black foamies in the initial set, I was wondering if they follow the same sizes as the other standard PVC and black rubber sleeves.)

a) Yes, the composition of the foamies makes a difference to the sound. PVC foamies (the porous/yellow shure foamies) are better for a more balanced sound, the higher freq range remains quite present whereas the utherane (soft, smooth/shure black foamies) will enhance bass tones and reduce higher freq clarify (to what extent depends on the IEM, eg Etymotic's are not too badly affected, whereas future sonics IEMs are).

Some people have commented that the length of the foamie also makes a different, in that the longer it is, the more bass presence, but you need not worry about this theory unless you are going to make your own foamies, which I am going to try soon, just waiting for the earplugs to be delivered.

b) The black foamies come in S/M/L and M seems to fit most people who used the yellow foamies perfectly. Trial and error may be the way to go, you can easily sell the incorrect size as a lot of people would be willing to purchase them.

THanks for the response, Navmau. I guess I would be going for the yellow foamies which I have already tried. I love the balanced sound they create. Maybe later, I'd give the black ones a try to see if I like the extra bass.

The yellow foams are also quite small, and may not be optimal in a cold climate (like Canada). Some days they're just so cold that they won't expand as quickly as the black foamies, and end up slipping out.
