Was looking for an extremely detail, transparent, airy sounding pair of canal phones. the Logical choice would prolly be the ety 6i, but are there any other suggestions?

With those sonic attributes, and at that price point, I think you're limited to either the ER6i or ER6. Stretching your budget a bit to around $125 or so would get you the Shure E3. A bit more bass, but not as detailed.
Then if you could stetch your budget a bit further, you could get.......................Oh, hell, it never ends!
Get the ER6i, plug 'em in, enjoy the music, and never come back here again.

For all that I can think of right now I would have to agree with Joe. For ~$100 you are looking right at the Etymotic Research ER6i & ER6, actually right now they are selling for significantly lower than that. A little bit up and the Shure E3C is promissing, but the ER6i & ER6 are the ones that come to mind when your desires are read.

I can prolly predict the answer already, but would the jump from er6 to the er4 justify the extra cash.

The ER4 is deffinitly "worth it" its one of the best canalphones in the world, but if you are trying to stick around $100 then stay with the formentioned ER6i or ER6, don't spend all you money at once. The ER4 will still be here waiting for you when you are ready to spend more. The ER6i & ER6 are plenty amazing, especially if you should only spend $100. They are even less than $100 now and will provide some amazing sound while you save up for your next purchase, or better yet, leave a happy man!

I understand what you are saying, but spending money in the present so you don't have to spend it in the future is rarley a good investment. Saving and investing money in the present so you have more to spend in the future is thw way to go. Especialy since the value of Etymotic Research canalphones has been declining for at least 6 months, save that dough an have a good wait, the ER4 will soon be yours if it is ment to be, and in the mean time you might be able to use your money to make a little more ching.
