So I'm building a XLR to XLR IC. I understand that I'll be using Pins 2 & 3, and maybe leaving 1 untouched. However, if I want to provide some shielding, do I tie the shield to Pin 1? If so, only on source end, correct?

Thats how I do all my XLR cables on both ends.

That is how I do it. 2 and 3 hot, pin one shield on the source side.

It's a run of about 3ft. Are there any serious consequences from leaving out shield (i.e., tie nothing to Pin 1)?

Only in very high RF environments.
