Skylab likes the Arietta a lot, and he thinks it's a bargain for the money. On the other side, the Reference is not only the reference in portable amps, but also a bargain for the price it sells. Home amp vs portable amp: how do they compare together?

I don't know what the final configuration of the Reference will be. I have about 4 different ones. I have one with a 12,000uf cap that is very well burnt in and it sound excellent, the others don't quite match it but are still better than most anything I have heard. I do have the latest version but it is not fully burnt in yet so I don't know what it will really sound like.

jamato8,
Post back some results at your convenience. Let us know how it sounds against some of your home amps as well as your extensive collection of portable amps.

Thanks a bunch jam.

Hope you don't mind me calling you jam (short for jamato8)

jamato8,
Would you be willing to loan it to Skylab so he could do an evaluation of it and slot into his portable amp review? I'm sure alot of us would be interested in where it lands in the evaluation.

The only problem is that I don't know if this is the final version. There is no point to review betas as a final version so how it may or may not stand up in the line-up of amps may not be faithful to what the Reference will eventually be. At this point I prefer my 12,000 version and it is not the final version if the 22,000uf turns out to be the "final" version. The 22,000uf also needs a few hundred hours on it to know the actual sound but I have been moving lately with no real time to devote to different amps.

Oh, and it's Jam now, in case you haven't heard. :^)

I don't know of orders being filled but I also do not know if the final version has been decided on or not.

LOL....LOL....LOL

I'm thinking about changing my name to something along the lines of "P.B" or "Wonder"?

Which one is better Jam?

It's nice to see old folks holding on to that special inner child.

(in case you haven't guess, the P is short for peanut, and Wonder is the delicious slices of flour bread that I grew up with)

I certainly agree with "Jam" (lol) - I wouldn't want to review a beta version. This is not useful. If it's every possible to determine that there is a "final" version (generally difficult with Xin in my experience), I would love to have the chance to review it.

But I would want to do this more in conjunction with my portable amp review than versus the Arietta. The Arietta is, IMO, a better choice for someone who wants a home amp than the Xin would be, if just due to form factor.

Hello jam,how would you rate the beta version with any other portable amp especially the hornet when it comes to driving headphones like the 701s or the hd650s ?ithe beta version would atleast give us a rough idea as to what we could expect from the final version

I don't have the 701's or the Hornet but if you send them to me I will compare them to the Reference. I do have PROline 750's, HD650, Equation 21's and assorted other monitors. I did read somewhere by someone who does have a Reference and the 701's that the Reference drives them fine but compared to the Hornet I can not say.

I am sorry you feel you are an old folk. Not that anything is wrong with that but it does elicit visions of a paling complection, loss of teeth, gumming of food , incontinence and gas.

I would go with P not for pee but for Pops. :^) I used to like peanut butter with mustard. There is a nice compliment in the flavor.
