XDUoo XD05PRO

For those who want to try an external R2R dac I higly recommend this little gem that for less than 180 dollars (version with dedicated power supply) offers an extraordinary result in terms of width and depth of the soundstage, the best I have ever heard, maintaining detail and excellent separation/identification of the instruments in space (3D positioning). An even wider and more articulated soundstage but (and) removing that sense of crowding and fatigue that characterizes the ESS, compared to which it results in a more material (full) soft and relaxed listening, but without sacrificing dynamics and detail.
Obviously both voices and acoustic instruments gain in body and naturalness, a characteristic of all R2R.

All this... already with the stock Muse 8920, whose performance has however been significantly improved by the new configuration of the driver circuits of the V3 version, but it can then be further improved by replacing the 8920 with this new L.K.S Audio Pure Class A opamp (discrete board- external mount) that I discovered, which makes the sound even more "analog" and absolutely free from fatigue, while maintaining excellent details and separation.

I recommend trying this also in pair on the XD05 Pro, the best result I have obtained so far; compared to the MuzgAudio it has a greater soundstage, instrument separation and even more less listening fatigue.
This is fantastic, thank you very much for sharing. The R2R v3 DAC looks like a significant improvement over the v2 version in terms of design.

Funnily enough, I have a pair of the L.K.S opamps in my Ali basket so it sounds like I order them. Do they fit inside the v3 case or do you need to leave the lid off?

Thanks again for your continued research and sharing of information.

That's correct, yes. You'll obviously need two of them. They should fit without issue. A couple of alternative options that have been mentioned

Burson V5iD - https://www.bursonaudio.com/products/supreme-sound-opamp-v5i
Trulis HA8801 or HA8802 - https://penonaudio.com/trulis-ha8801ha8802.html

Totally agreed with your findings. ROHM seems to bring the vocals more forward hence I feel makes vocals more pronounced & more enjoyable to listen to.
I find the loss of soundstage, both in depth and width, to be a dealbreaker for me. When coupled with the crisper and more detailed sound coming from the AKM DAC module, I prefer AKM over ROHM regardless of the filter selection.

After your request I did some specific tests and I can confirm that the ROHM module enhances the voices better, as well as all the string instruments, both compared to the ESS module and to the external R2R DAC (I bought the V3 which sounds even better...).

Compared to the singers it is as if for example with the other modules the singer was about 4 meters away from me, while when I switch to the RHOM it is as if the distance decreased, and therefore perceiving her closer I distinguish the texture of the voice better.

However, this effect creates a more intimate type of listening, in the sense that the whole scene is perceived closer to your head, and the side effect is a less wide and deep stage.

With my new mini DAC R2R V3 I perceive a wider, deeper stage with excellent spatiality and definition of the instruments in the scene, which I prefer especially with classical music, but there is no doubt that to make you hear all the possible texture of a singer the RHOM module works better.
For external R2R DAC, I recently connected Hiby RS2 to XD05 Pro, and preliminary result is pretty promising 😊

Yes, you're right! ROHM module actually suffers from a loss in soundstage but a more upfront and forward mids which is pleasing to listen to vocals.
Actually it depends on the type of music you've listening to & your preferences to sound signature. It's very personal thingy & objective, there is no right or wrong.

Anyone tried those companies that mod the Xudoo XD-05PRO DAC module?

Fits internally, even if it doesn't close the lid.
Take three.

A few people got theirs done by np audio i believe
Yep, I've had all three of the DAC modules upgraded by NP Audio. All are improved, particularly the ROHM and ESS for me. I have never really enjoyed the AKM as much as the other two, whether modded or not. I'm not sure how a modded DAC module would perform in a stock XD05 PRO, but I've compared the DAC modules alone to my Quloos QA390LE. Prior to any mods, the QA390LE DAC (ES9038 PRO) was superior to the ESS or ROHM modules. After mods and burn-in, I feel both upgraded DAC modules are on par, if not slightly "better". They're all very close and require concentrated listening to spot differences.

The modded ESS in the XD05 PRO feels just a little more open and spacious. The modded ROHM, interestingly, seem to have slightly smoother high end and isn't quite as bright as the QA390LE. I would still pick the ROHM as my favourite overall.

I'm buying an already NP Audio modified XD05 Pro (from an Head-Fier), which should arrive me next week; once it arrives I will be able to do some comparative tests and then I will put my unmodified one up for sale. However, others had already reported their impressions here on the result of that type of modding, citing mainly improvements in the quality of the bass (less bloated and more defined) and in the increase in spatiality and detail of the soundstage. I will be able to confirm... after my A/B tests.

I was honestly undecided whether to abandon this platform and go directly to an excellent tube power amp (Quicksilver Audio HA), but then I realized that, knowing myself, I would have started experimenting with tube roll again... incurring other expenses for thousands of dollars...; better to capitalize on what I have already spent so far and keep a platform from which I understood that I can still get excellent results, maintaining flexibility and the possibility of using it also as a "transportable" (maybe with the future R2R module).

I'm pleased one of the modded XD05 PROs is going to a good home. I'll be very interested to read your impressions once you have time to compare the two. I hope you enjoy the modded version as much as I am.

Like you, I'm trying to stay away from tube rolling. The prices are terrifying.
