Have you tried feeding the XD05 Pro via the 3.5mm SE or 4.4mm Balanced In with an external DAC?
I'm mentioned this because yesterday I feed the XD05 Pro with my Cayin RU7 dongle via the 4.4mm balanced In and I noticed two things. Battery consumption was significantly reduced when feeding the unit with an external DAC and also the unit barely got warm during 1 1/2 hours of music listening, it's possible that if you're using the internal DAC card you currently have installed in the XD05 Pro, because the power supply of the unit has to work extra hard in order to power both the DAC and Amp sections and at least with my brief testing, it seems that the DAC section is the most demanding, so if you can, taking it out of the equation might be a good way to troubleshoot your problems
Brought it to the office, the thing is I have only tested it with closed backs like the Focal Elegia, Radiance, Azurys and Fiio FT1, but it drives every one of those to their fullest capabilities while using pretty intensive EQ profiles for all of them.
Need to test it with my big planars and see if it got what it takes to drive something like the HEKse or LCD-X with the EQ profiles I'm using.
Regarding my impressions of feeding the Cayin RU7 into the XD05 Pro, it maintains all the dynamics and punch of the ESS DAC module while increasing the sound stage substantially, spacial presentation is out of this world and it's smoother sounding in general, more natural, but it does introduce a little bit of back ground noise, it could be the fact that the RU7 is inherently a little bit noiser or it could be that feeding an external DAC into the XD05 Pro carries with it a little bit higher of a noise floor, but yesterday while doing my testing I used my LCD2C with dekoni version of the vegan pads and my HEKse with, again, pretty intensive EQ profiles for both of them and I was pushing the volume hard on the XD05 Pro and it maintains control of the drivers pretty well, lot of punch and slam.
I also noticed that the unit didn't get that hot while running it in this configuration and I started with a full charge on the unit and finish my 1 1/2 hour listening session without dropping a single bar, so this means that most of the battery is going to the DAC section of the unit and this is also what get's it kind of hot, could explain why xDuoo put the vents on the back of the unit, it was to cool off the DAC section.
When xDuoo finally releases the R2R module for the XD05 Pro, this is the minimum performance and SQ I'm expecting of it, again the RU7 is an usb powered dongle, granted a really good quality one with absolutely top tier SQ at any price, but this is going to be a dedicaed DAC module that's not going to have to be do doing the peaces of a whole dongle.
I'm awaiting my adapter cable so I can feed both the EF499 and the Cyan 2 into the XD05 and also I think next monday I'll be receiving the sparkos op-amps, the adaptar cable I check up again on aliexpress and apparently I will have to wait a couple more weeks to receive them, I really want to see how much this unit can scale with opamp swaps and feeding it significantly higher tier DACs.

I'm using it with my HE-R10P and yes the K11 R2R is a steal for it's price ! It drives the phones beautifully.
I was using the XD05 Pro with my MDR-Z1R but with the Hifimans I don't like the sound so much, it's not as musical.
Awaiting the R2R module for the XD05Pro and then perhaps back to it again
You do realize that this does nothing, outputting one DAC to another ?
On the other hand if you are using the XD05 Pro as an AMP only and using the RU7's R2R DAC, then the ESS DAC is not used.

I find my hifimans really engaging with the XD05 Pro, what I care more about is weight and bass impact and the XD05 Pro delivers on all those fronts and the treble is well controlled, none fatiguing, but then again there's your personal perception of the sound, one of the reasons I moved to the EF499 and now the XD05 Pro is because with the S17, no matter how much EQing I did, any hifiman can sounded harsh and fatiguing as heck.
So far the XD05 Pro has handle every headphone I have thrown at it really well, still yet to find a headphone that hasn't had a good synergy with it.
