I'd reccomend going with the Cmoy and headphones suggested earlier, but spend 400 bucks on a decent 720p LCD 32" TV. Almost all 360 titles are 720p (as stated earlier) and honestly, on a 24" monitor, you're going to be sitting far enough away not to be able to tell the difference between 1080p and 720. Get the TV, spend 100 bucks on a Cmoy + sr 60s and call it a day. You'll be happy you did.

that is easily fixed by changing a setting on the dashboard... 5 seconds of google is all you need

never had a problem with washed out colors when i had my xbox hooked up to my monitor

Yeah VGA is fine colour wise and also makes DVD playback look very nice indeed. However, I had to switch back to component as I would get a lot of screen corruption when switching from TV mode to the 360.

This meant lots of switching off and on of the TV etc. to get a clear picture. Component has no problems but I dont get the upscaling that VGA gave.

Probably a TV thing rather then a fault of the 360.

With the Xbox360 and the PS3 you can get full 1080p from the component cables. Though a game is usually made for 720p, so it will just be upscaled. (remember only the newer model 360s can upscale to 1080p)

VGA doesn't do the whole high-definition 1080 lines of detail(1080p). It will give you the big 1080 resolution though (1080i). Same with 720; yes for 720i; no for 720p.
But that's for video games.

For movies on the 360/PS3, using analog signal (component), is restricted to only 1080i due to those disc copyright protection laws. It is not restricted for the digital outputs (VGA or HDMI).
That is why you get scaling for your VGA output but not component.

As for the clearness of the pictures, your colors are probably off due to cheap component cables. (I'm not saying to empty your wallet on Monster Cables; but try Monoprice.com; but Monster Cables would work too)

all of them can upscale to 1080p not just newer models
VGA will give you 1080p and 720p on the 360
VGA is an analog output

you're right about component on both limiting HD movie playback (HD DVD on the 360 bluray on the ps3) to 1080i and no upscaling over component on those systems (IIRC PS3 used to upscale DVDs without CSS protection over component but it was disabled in an update)
