I can't comment on the X5's, but from using the Custom 3's over the past month, their sound signature is highly detailed, slightly warm and dark, with an emphasis on bass. They also do vocals, guitar distortion and cymbals very well. Soundstage is lacking compared to the Shure SE530. Paired with my mini3 amp, it sort of "tightens" up and improves the bass extension. YMMV with other amps though.
