EDITED:

It doesn't show up in Windows Explorer.

EDIT: In Device Manager USB Controllers it shows with an error when I plug it in.

"This device cannot start. (Code 10)
STATUS_DEVICE_DATA_ERROR"

I'm a hi-fi newbie who just purchased an x3ii.  Set up is looking daunting.  I've googled how to format micro sd cards but I'm not understanding it fully and it doesn't even show up as a device in windows 8.1 when I plug it in.  So I don't know how I can even look at the card.

EDIT: Crap.  I just found something on these forums that says you can format it from the device.  I was looking in the wrong direction...

But it still doesn't show up in Windows.

Hello, can you restart windows and / or try plugging in using a different micro USB cable?

Done & done.  Still won't see it in explorer.  Tried updating drivers through device manager & installing all Windows optional updates.  Tried googling things like micro USB drivers but it all comes back to Windows drivers which Windows can't find.  But now...  It doesn't show up in device manager's USB controllers section.  It only shows in "Other Devices>SM Bus Controller."

"The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
There are no compatible drivers for this device.

To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver."

And Windows can't find a driver.

I'm not a computer genius so I'm lost at this point.

EDIT: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/20775/Intel-Chipset-Device-Software-INF-Update-Utility-

This fixed the SM Bus Controller Error, but now I'm back to USB Controller error.

None of this worked.

Also when I click the Windows Start button and bring up the touch screeny interface crap and go to PC Settings>PC & Devices>Devices   It shows up there as

"Fiio USB Audio Class 2.0 DAC
Driver Error."

Oh. Your X3 is set to DAC mode which would explain the situation. Your X3 is attempting to function as a USB sound card (although it would still need driver installation in Windows for that) rather than as a storage device.

Go to System Settings->USB mode and change to "Storage" and everything should work. :)

Hi,

Although the original poster was trying to use it in storage mode, he is correct that it does not work as a DAC.

I have the first gen X3 and it works fine on a windows computer (win7) although getting the software working was quite a challenge.

My X3 second gen does not work at all. Windows doesn't recognize it and will not install the driver.  What the poster describes is exactly what happens for me and it will not work.

When I plug both the X3 and X3ii into a Macbook, they both works fine and exactly as it should.

Hello RJSK,

You need a new version of the DAC driver that recognizes the X3 2nd gen: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2eqthpf3qt3187c/X3%202nd%20gen%20USB%20DAC%20Driver%28compatible%20with%20X3%26X5%29v1.61.zip?dl=0

Let me know if that work for you?

Best regards,
Joe

Hey, I have been run ragged this past week with Air Force Honor Guard training. Sorry I didn't reply sooner, but I just wanted to say thank you for personally responding to my problem so quickly. It works great now, and I'm in love with the product. I have never heard so much detail, seperation and smoothness etc. In my life. Genesis albums on CD and Phil Collins Face Value album in 24 bit!!! I am impressed with your company service.

Yes the new software did work.  I though since the version number was the same it was the same software, but I installed the driver provided in the link and it worked fine.  I also didn't have the problems I previously had with the install failing.  Thanks for the assistance.

If the installation was indeed successful, you should have a new device named after the X3II in Control Panel->Hardware and Sound->Sound. Click on it and then click Set Default below, then click OK, and sound should start coming through the X3 :)

Joe

  hi again
i have reinstalled the driver, and checked in music and it is listed as fiio x3 ii

so that part seems fine, but i still have no sound

Have you selected it as «default device»?
