x3 - Freeze while playing
Jan 15, 2014 at 8:15 AM Post #16 of 29
Start up.  Play, say,  folder 1 song 1, after skip to folder 2 song 2... After about 10 selection the player freeze.  Had to do a hard reset and when boot up, it's at folder 1 song 1 position.  Is this a memory issue?

BTW, i have 2 X3 having the same problem.

please contact our technical support team by support@fiio.com.cn, they may need more detail information to help us figure out what happened.

I was having this problem since months. It's annoying when such a great player freezes when playing HD music (FLAC in my case)!

Then I found this thread (not easy though) and checked the embedded covers. The smallest was 1000x1000px 1 MB. Another one was 1500x1500px...

Installed Mp3Tag and took them all out of the files. What a surprise:
- Switching between songs improved significantly
- No freeze
- Gapless to be tested - will write later.

Maybe it makes sense to write some limitation for the embedded covers in the official user manual.
I will most probably create one cover art picture per folder for my music, when it gets supported with the next FW.
Till then - no covers. Unfortunately.

Freezing while playing is a very severe problem. Just using the player for half an hour or so is not really the problem. But playing for a longer time: Within 90 minutes the player freezes for about three times, and this is the case in about 90% of the usage. I know I should not switch too fast from one track to another. But even without any switches at all the freezes like mentioned above occur too often.

In all the discussions I could not read anything in this forum (also concerning new firmware upgrades) avoiding those freezes. FIIO, please let me know whether you could give a solution of this massive problem.

Hello jackfin, what firmware version are you on? Also, can you tell us more about the music files you play, the card you use, etc.?

Best regards,

Hi Joseph,
I use the firmware 3.0 and a SanDisk Ultra 64 GB micro card formatted with FAT 32. Most of my files are FLAC files with 16 Bit/44,1 kHz, some hires FLAC files, a few mp 3 files. The files are loaded via the card reader/writer in my Mac. After I transformed the ALAC files which also existed a few months ago, to FLAC files I could solve two problems:

1. The update of the library did not stop anymore just in the middle. Now, it works always fine.
2. Inadequate genres are not existing anymore, i.g. Pink Floyd suddenly was a techno band although the test of the tags did not show those problems.

OK with this but not with the freeze. Yesterday for instance I played one album with 13 titles in the sequence from 1 to 13 without any manual inputs. Only with the third trial the X3 came to the end. With the first two trials it stopped at track 5 and at track 10 or so. This means it is not a mistake which can be reproduced.

I hope this is enough information for describing the situation from my side and for finding a solution from your side.

Best regards

Is an album artwork embedded in the files? If yes, which size/format it is?

I was experiencing -lot of fw versions ago- the same behaviour with some FLAC files with huge art embedded in.

The artwork of this specific album which I tested several times for freezing problems at the same position or not has a file size of 57 KB with 455x451 pixels in the jpeg-format. I know that large file sizes with about 1500x1500 pixels won´t be displayed by the X3 (FW 3.0) but nevertheless the tracks will be played correctly. Therefore, I only have sizes of maximum 600x600, in most cases less.

I hope that FIIO will be able to give assistance because the player should work corresponding to the specifications.

Hello jackfin,

Have you tried firmware 3.24beta?

http://www.head-fi.org/t/742014/x3-firmware-3-22-3-24beta-m3u-playlists-5-band-eq-nooneleftbehind

Although it is beta firmware, there has been many improvements since 3.00, and it may solve your problem (besides, it is the base we are working on).

Do let me know of any developments. :)

Oh BTW, where and how was your SD formatted to FAT32? Via the X3's format command or?

Best regards
Joe

Hi Joe,
I made a longer test: 2 days, each with ten hours, all together about 300 tracks. I played all songs in the numerical alphabetical sequence. And what happened? No freeze at all! Most albums were played with two tracks, at least with the first track because of the numerical alphabetical sequence. This means that the tag structure generally is ok.

But what happens when I come to another sequence, for instance all songs in one album or the random sequence playing all songs? Freezing is the result.

I will try to test the new beta version. I will report about the results.

Once I formatted the sd card with FAT 32 by the Mac and once by the X3. Now, I don´t know what was the last formatting step. What is essential in this respect?

Best regards

So, I´m back again after updating the firmware from 3.0 to 3.24b and I have to say:
The freezing problem seems to be solved.  I now made several tests in very different ways and the X3 works fine, finally.

By the way, connecting the X3 to an amplifier via line-out or digital-out you can reduce the loudness to zero and the X3 will run up to 20 hours. Almost everybody will know it (or not?) but this information I never found in this forum.

Just to add that after removing all embedded artwork from the songs I had no single freeze now for 3 months.
Still waiting for the folder artwork display functionality though. Hope it comes in the new FW.
