X-fi with a good amp

hi i recently purchased a good cans amplifier, and i connected it to my x-fi card. I haven't seen too much improvement. So i noticed that this amp has some trimmers to regulate input gain. Can this improve sound quality (by lowering the gain for example). Tnx

What is the quality of the sound files? What amplifier? What headphones (K601?)?

the files i play are flac, and yes the cans are k601. The amp is unknow here, but is famous to be good. I'm thinking to buy an external dac...

The gain is really to prevent hiss on low impedance cans, or conversely to ensure that the volume on high impedance cans is loud enough. I don't think playing with the gain is going to make much difference. I also found the effect of adding a headphone amp is quite subtle (or maybe my H5 is too cheap to make a big difference).
