Hi Guys, I bought a X-Fi Forte (Headphones = MDR-7509) and I'm not exactly happy with the surround sound to say the least, I mean sure I can kinda tell the direction a noise is coming from, but it's nothing like real life at all, it's just weird, it's like you actually have to really think about it to figure out where the sound is coming from to figure it out where as I was expecting to just be able the hear the sounds and be like ya that noise is behind me to the right like that.

Anyway after seeing the various setting problems people have with x-fi cards (and even more so in Vista 64) I'm thinking maybe I just don't have the settings tweaked right.

Now through google searches I keep seeing that one thing people recommend you do that I can't figure out for the life of me is to UNCHECK SYNC in the control panel?!? I've looked in sound and dug through the windows control panel and for the life of me I haven't a dam clue where this is! Every post I've seen discussing this just pretty much assumes you know, but I have no clue! Anyone here know?

There is no such setting, are you sure they aren't talking about v-sync?

All you have to do is make sure it's in game mode, and EAX mode is selected. If you're running under Vista do have alchemy, and added games to the list? Disable CMS3D and Crystaliser.

I've played games under XP with X-Fi, surround system and it's great. But in Vista without alchemy EAX did funny things, or just ran in stereo or with CMS3D type weirdness.

How many speakers are you running and what settings do you have your card at? Surround Sound on my Forte is awesome (but i'm in Windows XP!).

EDIT: Oh, you're using headphones.

1) Set your driver's settings to Game Mode, Headphones.

2) X-Fi CMSS-3D Headhpones needs to be turned on. MacroFX and Elevation Filter should be turned to "on".

3) Turn off "Synchronize with Control Panel".

4) Go to your control panel, Sounds & Speech, then to Sounds & Audio Devices. Under "Speaker Settings", click Advanced, and set your sound to "5.1" (or 7.1, your preference.) Apply and restart your computer.

5) Set your game's audio settings to match your Control Panel's Audio settings (so if you selected 5.1 earlier, set them to 5.1 in the game. Turn on all EAX features ingame too.)
