I suspect his site fell victim to a worm of some sort. It would be my guess that it is like that one that compromised Windows web servers awhile ago.

Most likely it was some script kiddie just doing a ping sweep and this particular site happened to have a vulnerability that his software picked up. Extremely easy to do. It's sad, "hacking" has been reduced to point 'n click. What happened to the days of ping, whois, and finger?
