After a budget purchase on ebay that turned out to be a DOA dud I got wife approval to get a real amp. Sell me your current desktop balanced amp to fund an upgrade. Looking for something w/o an integrated DAC along these lines: Auralic Taurus mkii, SPL Phonitor E, Neurochrome HP-1, Aune S7 Pro, Questyle amps, etc...

Not really interested in anything by Schitt, Audio-gd, or Massdrop-created at the moment since I'm looking to try new equipment.

I also have an NFB 11.28 if you're looking for a trade + cash deal. Thanks for reading

So, you are not interested in anything from Schiit? I guarantee you... the Schiit Mjo 2 with the right tubes will eat those amps you have listed for lunch! I joke you not! I may have thought like you until I tried it... now, I am really enjoying my music... along with an Auralic Vega DAC and Audeze LCD-3F headphones. Quite a combo!

How about a Cavalli Liquid Carbon V1? It's cheap enough to buy 2 amps for your budget

@Skooks I haven't heard the Mjo2 personally but I may add it to the list if the Monolith Liquid Platinum continues to be hard to buy.

Chord Hugo doesn't appear to be balanced, and a Liquid Carbon V1 sounds tempting but I'm trying to hold out for something newer. Saw your other thread though so GLWS

I'm telling you... the Mjo 2 with NOS Telefunken tubes is hard to beat! I've had the Violectric V-281... and it doesn't beat it. I've had the ifi Pro iCan... and it doesn't beat it. But, you must have the Telefunkens installed to get that kind of sound!

I don't think the Neurochrome is balanced. It has balanced inputs, converts that to single ended. The 4 pin jack at the front is there for convenience, not balanced output. see - https://www.verumsonus.com/neurochrome-hp-1-review/ "After publishing the review I spoke further with Matt to correct some of the inaccuracies in my description of the amps topology which have since been corrected. In discussion with him, I learned that the amp is in fact a single ended amplifier, using balanced connections only for the convenience and lower crosstalk."

Not to say it's a bad amp, I haven't heard it, seems well specc'd.

Your correct that the NeuroChrome's not balanced, not sure it matters much with it's excellent performance. Though a very different experience compared to something with tubes. I've never heard the Mjo2 but the impression I get is that it has not aged so well, many prefer even the Lyr 3 over it, and I don't know if it can keep up with Liquid Plat.. any decent tube amp sounds great with 300$ nos tubes in it. You just missed a wicked sale on the LP.. amazon had 7 units that they sold for 704$ last week, they went quick.

I have a mint-condition Questyle CMA600i that I'm planning to sell for that amount if interested. It does have an integrated dac, but I don't use the dac at all. It's one of the best solid state balanced amps I've ever heard, but I'm hoping to upgrade to a TOTL tube amp. PM me if interested.

Looks pretty sweet but unfortunately no 4-pin xlr.

Again, great amp. Just wish it had XLR inputs for use with an external balanced DAC.

Great deal, I'll have to keep an eye out. Not sure if Hifishark crawls Amazon too :]

Ditto. I was about to make the same post. Where are all the balanced amps?
Here's what I've gathered in my search.

Best Value:
  • Audio-Gd NFB-1
  • Senn HDVA 600 (used)
  • Cayin iHA- 6
  • Aune S7 Pro

Best in the $800-$1k range:
  • Mjolnir 2
  • Monoprice Liquid Platinum
  • Questyle CDMA 400i / 600i (used)
  • Auralic Taurus mkii (used)
  • *SPL Phonitor E (used)
  • *Neurochrome HPA-1

*Not fully balanced but great amps nonetheless

I'm sure there are more, especially in the tube world but I've been leaning towards SS/hybrid. Someone here is also selling a Little Dot X1 for less than $800 which looks really solid but I only found one user review on it. There are also some peculiarities with each amp (long term build quality issues, sound signature you may not like, etc...) so do your research.

I ended up purchasing the Sennheiser amp I mentioned above, and although it is a bit veiled it has really grown on me when I paired it with a planar. In addition to its great separation I love the looks and stellar build quality so I plan on keeping it around for a while. Also plan on getting used Mjo2 to compliment it based on Skooks' (and others') rave reviews, so I'm still keeping an eye out in the classifieds. Good luck in your search.

Edit- there's also this thread that provides more budget options:
