I bought an HD650 a few weeks ago and was rather disappointed in them. The treble was heavily recessed even after "de-veiling" them. The bass was too heavy and boomy. Music just wasn't exciting... The only thing they had going for themselves was the soundstage, and it wasn't really that impressive with the other things the way they were.

<<<skip a few weeks>>>

I pulled the HD650's out again, wanting to give them another try just to make sure I hated them before I put them up for sale, and...

BOOM!

The beauty of their sound just hit me. Although the treble is recessed compared to Grado's, there is so much more detail in the treble than on my SR225's. What have I been missing? I had my 2econd eargasm ever listening to some "Pink Floyd - PULSE - Hey You" Even though Grado's are generally thought of as better for rock, there's just something about these Senn's that makes the music stand out to me so much more... maybe its just the combination of live music with a wider soundstage... but I'm hooked, now i'm gonna invest in one of them nifty Silver Dragon v2's ^_^

instead of investing in expensive cables, save up for better source equipment. The 650s will get to rockin if you go for something like the Music Fidelity XcanV3

I fully intend on investing in a Benchmark DAC1 as soon as I have the money saved up, and I can do bit-perfect out of my X-Fi. AFTER that is when I'll get the Silver Dragon lol

I think they need a couple of hundred hours to fully settle in. The bass firms up and the frequency response smooths out. I find that they also get more dynamic. I have some very fine silver wires for the 650's and the stock and the stock, when you have good upstream stuff, to me sound fine.

I'm getting my Benchmark DAC1 in a few days.....I'll let you know how its HP amp goes with the Senn HD600! In my case, I'm doing USB to spdif. I'm not expecting miracles with its amp....I'm sure the next purchase after the HD650 will be the XcanV3. The reason why I think maybe another amp is that I've heard the little dot can get some tube problems and make the 650 veiled. Don't know if there could be some of that going on in your system. "Deveiling" with foam removal, etc, doesn't help as much as an evaluation as your source equipment IMHO.

I have read about veiling so much about the 650's it only tells me that there is something upstream not working right. I have been in the audio enjoyment spending all my money thing for a number of years and I know veiling and the 650's do not have this. But if you have anything upstream not doing the job right you will hear it. I get no veiling but I do get dynamic clean sound from rock to classical from the micro to macro it is all there. Taking out the foam upsets the balance, in my opinion.
