Modify the D-311's battery compartment to accept aa batteries (since the rechargable has long since been dead?)

I'm not familiar with the 311, but according to Duncan's review it uses a BP5, right?
If so, the battery compartment is too small for AAs. I had a similar idea for my D-35 after noticing that two AAAs would just fit in there. I've tested it by hooking up two alkalines with alligator clips to the pins inside the compartment. The display would light up, but no go on the disc-playing, guess the voltage is too low.

hm, what about 9v batteries? they are little bigger .. but ... hm.
that's a pity, i guess i'm stuck with the battery pack?
