Would a MS-1 be a poor mans HP-1?

I don't think there is a poor mans HP-1. If there was, I think we would have heard about it by now.

That being said, the MS-1 is a fine, fine headphone.

Poor man's?? I would say poor, rich man's. I got the SR60 instead of the SR80/MS1 to save 30 bucks and I'm glad I did.

You're going to experience upgraditus anyway so just get some nice MS1's and be glad you did.

The thing is, I bought the K501, DT770 and HD580 (again) all in the same day. I wub headphones

I am considering the MS1 or MS2 as possible future candidates. I want to see what all the hype was about

I'd say the Denon D2000 was the only headphone I tried that lived up to the hype.
