Im running Sennheiser HD-570 headphones, from the green audio output on my Soundblaster Audigy. Im wondering if buying a Cmoy would help me achieve better sound quality for gaming and listening to music. If i buy one from ebay lets say, what else do i need, other than the amp?

and whats a good price for one? im not able to build one myself.

Yes it would help. There is usually one for sale in the amp sale section. Prices usually vary according to accessories included like if a wall wart is included in the sale and the kind of enclosure used, but usual used prices usually hover at about $30-$50+.

Wall wart is a small power-supply brick, designed to plug directly into a wall outlet.

Yes, you'll need to get a cable, most likely terminated with mini (1/8) phono plug to connect your soundcard to an amp of your choice.

I'm a broke 19 year old, so I'll offer advice, instead. Get a new sound card, first. Consider new cans, too. Although I've never heard the 570, consensus around here is I shouldn't waste my time listening to them.

Still, if you enjoy it, thats all that matters.

I heard the 570s recently, and I was pleasently suprised. Good detail and good bass.

I think an amp will help you a little, but a new source would help more. Perhaps a Chaintech AV-710 (about $30) and a small amp would do the trick? You'd need to buy an interconnect to get from the sound card to the amp, it'd be 3.5mm to 2*RCA. You can get cheap ones from radio shack or wherever, or spend stupid sums to get fancy ones. For you i'd recommend one of the cheaper ones, I think.

i have a cable i bought at radioshack that has a headphone plug on one side (the small one, not the long fat one) and the two RCA audio outputs at the end. this is what i need right?

how will that chaintech do in games? will i miss anythign that my audigy has, other than EAX which i cant use right now because of a UT2k4 bug?

btw. i got the HD 570s for $35, so im happy with my purchase.

Yep, just keep using that cable. You probably won't hear the difference if you pay more anyway.

You can have 2 sound cards in your machine - use the audigy for games, the chaintech for music.

Depending on how the headphones sound straight out of the chaintech, you might not even need to bother with an amp - maybe someone who's tried it can comment on that.

You just leave the audigy as the default sound card, and have foobar/winamp choose the chaintech. All decent apps can choose which sound card they send their output to.

I can't comment on that amp myself, I don't know much about them, but that'd probably be the sort of thing you're after. Remember though it's battery powered, so you'd have to change bats all the time. One that can plug into the wall might be better for home.

you have a recommendation that plkugs into the wall? if im going to get the chaintech im going to need to save some moeny on an amp.

i think i may just sell the audigy if the chaintech sounds really good. switching would be a hassle.

btw. thanks for all the help

i may just keep my audigy, looks like the chaintech is a pain to setup. i think it would benifit me more by getting any amp, no?

Nope. Crap for a source equals crappy sound, no matter how well amplified.
