I've been pointed in the direction of the LaRocco PRII to drive my AKG K701s. This looks like what I'm after but I wonder if I should wait for the Diablo. Anyone know or heard anything about it? I'm not really interested in features like bass contour, crossfeed etc etc and just want a great sounding portable muscle amp for my AKGs.

If I remember correctly the first posts about the Diablo appeared last year. As far as I know the first 10 or so units have already been sold (at that time) and the buyers are still waiting for their new amp.
LaRocco only builts a small number of units so even if the Diablo should appear right away it will take some time before you will be able to aquirre one (but same goes for the PRII).
Nobody so far has seen more then a tiny little prototyp picture or heard the thing.
And it will not be cheap.
I own the PRII and I love the sound coming out of it. But honestly I had nothing more then a very simple CMOY to compare it with.
It will drive our phones without problem and has a very clear and revealing sound.
If you`ll be able to get one for a good price you will probably able to resell the PRII, if you think about switching to the Diablo.
I know because I got plenty of offers when I thought about selling my current rig.
Here is the link to the official Diablo thread:

Hope that helps.

Yes,
I agree. The PR2 is pricy enough and it sounds like it can do the job. I don't have to have the very very best and I can only imagine what the Diablo will sell for.

I have been keeping an eye on the diablo and PRII for a while...

the word "vaporware" comes to mind here. seems if you're fine with waiting upwards of 2 years (or more!) for a product to be released, the diablo is well worth the money!

(not to sound too harsh, but...)

Go ahead a do it. Delayed gratification is only for mature, emotionally stable adults. I'm still trying to get there.

I was briefly interested in one when I was looking at portable rigs. Vaporware is the perfect way to describe it- started on a forum post, sketchy details except for a bunch of promises, and after a year or more still nothing solid. IMHO there are too many quality alternatives out there to make going this way worthwhile.
