Worth it to get an audio line out for a 5G ipod?

Is there a noticeable difference between the line out and headphone jack?

If I do end up getting one, it'll be the cheapest one I can find. And I'll also be using a budget portable amp for my MS-1. Any recommendations for a cheap line out?

I hate being on a tight budget, but I'm just getting started with high quality audio, so I gotta start from the bottom and work my way up I suppose.

Are these qables for € 26,92 decent enough? As long as they get the job done and sound better than headphone output, I'll be plenty happy for now.

That LOD from Qables is $36.34 USD. I bought a ZV:M LOD from Qables and was not disappointed. The wait will be a bit longer to Virginia than buying from a US vendor.

You don't mention which amp you have but I'll guess that most will be an upgrade from the iPod amp section and using the line out vs. the headphone output is a must.

I'm just getting a PA2v2 amp just to get me started. Not the best, but better than nothing.

I've PMed Turbo, just waiting back for his response. I will most likely order from him.

And I see you live in Chesapeake... we don't live far from each other. I'm in Newport News

I used to own a PA2v2, it was my first portable amp and it served me well. If you haven't already placed your order with Gary for the PA2v2, you may want to consider having the gain lowered if you plan to use it with only low impedance.

For IEMs the PA2v2 with high(default) gain was way too much. I don't know how the MS-1 will pair with high gain. The problem with high gain & IEMs is that the volume on the PA2v2 won't get very far resulting in possible channel imbalance and poor volume range. This is a problem using a line out since it is fixed and not variable as with the headphone output.

Turbo makes great stuff- Ive bought both a line out dock and an IC. Very reasonable and sound great. Plus they look cooler than most of the other stuff out there. Recommended.

The cheapest Qables shipped would be $40.93 while the Turbodock Diabolous V8 is $54.

I'll be getting one or the other. I just have to decide. I'll probably end up with the Diabolous V8

Just a quick question

most of my music collection is between 192kbps -320kbps mp3. With bitrates as low as 192, would I still hear a difference between headphone and lineout? I hardly have anything FLAC. I don't want to get the line out if I won't notice a good deal of difference.

My music collection on my 5G iPod varies between 128(not much) and 320. 80 % is above 240. I own the Grado 325i and with the option to use the line out and portable amp I don't even consider listening to any songs from the headphone output.

When I owned the PA2v2 I used it with a Sony minidisc player at first and amped the headphone output(no line out). With this I could still hear a slight improvement.

As you step up to higher impedance cans the need for a portable amp becomes obvious. Also when you upgrade to a better portable amp, the difference between using line out/amp and headphone output is undeniable.

Here's what I'm thinking of doing now:

I'll probably go with that $35 head-direct line out since it's the cheapest and will be good enough for me.

And since that is almost half the price of the Turbodock, I'm thinking of bumping up amp quality a little bit into the ~$100 range. Any suggestions for that? but how does the go-vibe v5 compare to the pa2v2? The V5 is just slightly cheaper.

Personally I would recommend APureSound. I have had 3 different iPod LOD's from them and all of them sound fantastic. I even compared one to a lot of the ALO LOD's like the Vampire, Silver, and Cryo. The APS LOD sounded 10x better than. And more than 1/2 the cost.

Being that the iPod sucks as a source, you'd be better off (if you MUST have an iPod) getting a pair of custom westone ES2s and plugging it directly into the headphone jack, call it a day!
