Just got an offer for these headphones. They look to be in very good condition (judging from the pics), but they're 1 year old and the dude haven't got the receipt any more.

So I was wondering, seeing the good replies regarding these headphones is it worth buying them if they're 1 year old? Would the sound quality degrade during that time, or are there any other problems I should be expecting?

The main issues are treatment, how he treated them physically and sonically, condition of the ear pads, and how much he's asking for them.

If he's asking more than about 60-70% of the cost new, I'd pass on the cans.

If the ear pads are worn, it's up to you but might be hard to get a replacement sent to you.

He doesn't have a receipt, so it's his word about how old they are, can you trust this guy at his word?

You'll never know how loud he listened to these cans, so again it's about whether or not you would trust him as to whether he abused the cans and they will break not long after you get them.

Hmm, I don't know that guy, so I don't think I can fully trust him.

The headphones can be bought here for 450 AUD, he's asking 320, no less. Which makes it about 70-71%. So you reckon it's not worth it?

And yes, there's no telling how he treated them sonically. But physically they're in very good shape.

Otherwise I have options of Sennheiser HD280 Pro and Beyer 250-80, which cost around the 320-380 AUD mark (new).

What do you reckon I should go with?

Here's a quote from a guy who just posted this today:

Quote:

I'm currently using sennheiser HD 280 pro's with a JMT cha 47. Basically i have grown to like the very controlled nature of these phones for classical music, vocals and house (dance/beat) music. But i've come to the conclusion that they seem to lack the get up and go effect that many hard rock songs demand: something is just missing.

I've not heard these cans myself, so I can't comment on them.

Do you have some form of separate amp to power your headphones? Not a receiver, but an actual headphone amp.

Will you be buying one any time soon, like within 6 months or so?

What type of music do you listen to most?

Is there something you like in regular music listening preferences like lots of bass, treble, mids, etc.??

What's your budget for these headphones??

After you answer these I can help knock out some choices and reco some other stuff.

No, I'm gonna use the headphones without the amp. I'll use them with my PC (SB Audigy Platinum) and portable MD player.

I listen to a very wide range of music (from jazz to metal and house, depends on the mood), as well as watch DVD's on my PC at night.

I also prefer the sound to be balanced in all ranges - bass, treble and mids, although rarely I do add some extra bass, but that's very rare.

My budget would be a maximum of about 370 AUD.

Argun,

You a gambling man?? With $320 AUD, that's a choice only you can make. Since these normally cost much more than your budget they might be a huge blessing for the money.

I'm not much of a gambler, but would probably take the plunge and go for these cans. Please don't flame me if you do and they are broken, it's just what I would do myself.

What is the impedance of these cans andrzejpw, or anyone else?? I ask as he will run them out of a sound card and I don't remember if they're of the 300 ohm variety of the 580/600s.

Hehe, I'm not a gambler, but I'm having the same thoughts as you. At my budget, these cans would probably be the best thing I can get.

Their impedance is 120 Ohm btw. You reckon they will be alright with a portable MD player/PC sound card?

I agree with Andrzejpw, at 120 ohms they won't go really loud, but should still sound quite good from your source/sound card feed. If you want loud you will have to go much lower in impedance, like 32 ohms or so.

Have you talked to the guy on the telephone to get a feel for what he's like?

Does he offer any kind of guarantee? Does he have any references from other sales?

It’s always good to ask questions.

Good Luck.

Haven't talked to him on the telephone, but from the e-mails he seems pretty decent.

Although he hasn't got a guarantee or references.

I'll still get his details just in case.
