Hi

Just received a nice package through the door consisting of the parts (gonna get someone I know to build it for me) for my new pc! One bad thing though, it means I won't be able to upgrade anything hifi wise until way after christmas now, but hey thems the breaks huh?

Current system :-

PIII 733
Geforce 2 GTS
512 ram
25 Gig Hard Drive
Qdi Symantec Motherboard

New system:-

P4 2.53
Maxtor 80 gig Hard Drive
Graphics card ???
ABIT BE7 Motherboard
Corsair 512 ddr Ram

Yep the graphics card has got me stumped. I was going to order a geforce 4 ti4200 from leadtek, but sods law they are out of stock and claiming 1-3 days before getting anymore. I was also half toying with the idea of "going all the way" and getting a radeon pro 9700!

One last thing, I used overclockers.co.uk to order my parts and they took less than a day to deliver

so that made the end of my fortnights holiday a bit more bearable.

You didn't mention which motherboard you got.
You can't just swap the P3 with the P4.
(and the memory might not be the same. SDRAM vs DDR-SDRAM)

Edited the above.

I'm lucky (??!!) enough to work in a computer based company with fairly knowledgable people who more or less know what they are talking about and have built their own pc's. So that list was given a thorough perusal before making the final purchase!

Friend, unfortuantly, no matter how good your shop is, you can't use a p4 in a p3 motherboard. P4 processors use socket 478, while p3s use slot 1 or socket 370. It just won't work! Your ram will also probably need to be changed. Your p3 probably uses sd ram, while the p4 will use ddr or rdram(although you can use sdram with some motherboards(845), performance is abysmal).

David, congrats! I have a ATI 9700 pro and it rocks!!!!! a bit pricy thou.

As for the graphic card for your PC, I say the ATI 9700 PRO won't look out of place, a Ti 4200 will actually be holding the CPU back. But it is no mean slow, it'll be quick but it could be quicker.

I would get neither, instead wait for the ATI 9700 (not Pro) or the ATI 9500 PRO card, they should be around £150 - £200, much more affordable and faster then the GF series. Especially the ATI 9700, as it's just clock slower but technically the same card.

David, you have MSN? we can talk a bit more on there, raymondwlin@hotmail.com

Now that will work.

If you want to save a few pounds then I would also go for the 9700 or the 9500 pro.
(then you will be ready when dx9 is released and IMHO, the video quality of ATI boards is much better than the current nvidia products)
