I just picked up a NIB set of HD600s at StereoLand in Minneapolis for $149.

So far I'm impressed with them, and they have a really laid back & dark sound like everyone has said. They are definitely an upgrade from my HD280Pro, even without any burn-in.

That being said, what (besides the unbiqitious cable upgrade) makes these babies really shine? (ie, specific op-amp, music, etc)

You know, I've been bumming around here for months, and you're the first person that's said that to me.

Actually, I was a long time reader of the forum before I even joined. I even think I had built 1 or 2 META Mints before I joined. But neither here nor there.

I really should get a good source, but I'm working on the ic's in secret. That way my wife won't figure out what I'm up to.

I wanted to get more to sell on eBay, but this was the last one that was NIB. There was one more that was the demo model, but I wasn't sure what I could get for it, so I didn't buy it.

Actually, I was put onto the deal by this thread:

By the time I got there, they only had one pair left. Oh, well.

As to why I didn't wait for the HD650, Merton, I felt this was too good of a deal to pass up. Plus, the HD650 is an unknown. It might be better than the HD600, and it might not be. I can either have a great deal of confidence in getting something good today, or wait to pay more for something of unknown audio quality.

Clearly, I chose the $149 HD600.

Congrats on your HD600s! My first truly high-end headphones, though I did sell them eventually.

For amplification, take a look at the following thread - http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/showt...ighlight=HD600

If those mentioned here are beyond your price range, I might recommend a maxed out Meta, though avoid Burr Brown opamps (these tend to have a darker sound, which wouldn't match well with the HD600s already dark sound).

For cables, I think the Cardas look the best, though Equinox aren't far behind. If you can wait, Zu might be releasing one sometime soon. Zu's interconnects are generally well regarded around these parts.

Congratulations on purchasing the phones of the true believers!

Be sure to feed the headphones well. The 580/600s really do need a good system to shine. Most importantly, they need a good source. Good luck!

I think that they were clearing their inventory, and it is not going to be a permanent thing. In fact, the 'sale' ended on July 31st. They simply had a sale on their website advertising what the price was in-store, so I didn't have to talk them into lowering the price. They really had no explanation as to why they were priced so low, but I think it was in anticipation of the HD650 release.

BTW, if you decide to look at the ad on Stereoland's website, the picture they have is of the HD590, even though what was actually on sale is the HD600. I don't even think that they carry the HD590.

Congrats on your 600s! They're great cans stock, and become pretty awesome with an upgraded cable. My favorite cable for them is the Cardas blue. Takes them to a whole new level. The better the rest of your chain is the better they'll sound. The bass on mine really tightened up when I started driving them with a monster amp. Both the SAC/AKG K-1000 and the HeadRoom MAX really make the HD-600s sing!
