Won a pair of Bose QC15

So I won a pair of Bose QC15s yesterday, and I was set to "regift" them to someone. Of course, I couldn't resist coming here to read reviews first. Now I'm torn.... I don't want to open these and hate them, because then I'd feel tacky giving them away as a gift. But on the other hand, I could just give them to my husband and finally have those Metallica edition SkullCandy cans "accidentally" disappear.
I also have a pair of Bose AE2 (also won those), and I know how comfortable they are. However, they sound like a tin can and I only wear them on cold days when walking the dog because they fit nicely over a hat..... If these are like that, well, I don't need anymore crappy cans/ear muffs for the winter.
So to help me decide, can anyone tell me what a noise cancelling experience is like vs. an open backed headphone and why I would want it? I listen to 95% of my music via HD598s and am now used to the soundstage of that can. I really don't think I'd enjoy a noise cancelling head phone while sitting in my armchair, reading a book. I like using IEMs on flights, so I doubt I'd use them on a plane.
Anyone else who has these, what do you think? Obviously price isn't a factor here for me since they were free, but if they are garbage at any price, I'd rather gift them to someone who doesn't know better.

Well, the first thing I suggest is going to the following thread:
I gave my thoughts on the QC15s there just a few days ago. You'll see that myself and few others really love these cans. After reading that if you still have questions feel free to reply to this thread or PM me and I'll be happy to help.

I did, your review is why I'm torn! What the hell, I'll open them. There's worst things in life than a pair of headphones that didn't cost you anything. Will post my thoughts later today.

Good to hear. I look forward to reading your impressions!

    Initial impressions -
    - Not as comfy as the Bose Ae2, but I think these can be used for long listening sessions without too much discomfort
    - Shell case is a nice touch
    - Wires are very thin for the price point, but since they were free for me, not an issue!
    - Noise cancelling works as advertised. I can't hear anything outside, which I supposed is the point. But I did miss the FedEx guy ringing the bell... grrr....
    - I need to burn in, but I'm not big on the sound. Listened to Chairlift's  "Something". Bass sounds good, the highs are inconsistent on this album, and the mids sound tinny.
