Hey imagine if they had faced-off the Gameboy with that one. How can you determine what can be regarded as better: lot's of people with minor entertainment, or much fewer people, but with major entertainment?

@4:

Calculator vs AK: Both are evolutionary rather than revolutionary. AK wins for it's continued relevancy, even though it's over two decades older.

Sextant vs Compass: Both are revolutionary, but the compass had less of an effect as it changed when you could travel more than where you could travel. The sextant expanded where you could travel to everywhere. Sextant wins.

@2:

AK vs Sextant: The sextant was revolutionary, the AK wasn't. Sextant wins.

How it played out for me:

Semi Finals:
Atari 2600 vs Nintendo NES
Sony CDP-101 vs Pulsar Digital Wristwatch

Finals:
Nintendo NES vs Pulsar Digital Wristwatch

Yep, NES is the greatest on my list!

Ugh...Wii vs. the first color TV? That's not even fair!

there were so many life changing gadgets represented. I ended up with the iPod, but there could have been other winners such as the sextant as other have indicated. Pocket calculators, slide rules, microwave ovens, all changed the face of this planet.

Just ponder the magnitude of change forced upon the world by the simple iPod and the infrastructure and music distribution network around it. The record companies will learn how to play along or they will evaporate. Pretty powerful!

Been thinking about it and actually makes sense. Lord Byron once said: "One drop of ink makes thousand, perhaps millions think."....

Pens are one of the oldest existing inventions on that list. Let's say at least a sextant is much younger than the first writing tools (quill/feather pens, sticks, chisels).

Of all the competing items, the one that has been sold most, or is most widely used (the most common gadget) must also be the pen. Arguably there are more pens than TVs, or radios, or watches, or lighters, or actually anything else on that list.

And let's not forget function. Hey, you could even kill someone with a pen, yet you'd find it very difficult to write anything with an AK47 assault rifle.
